A disposable hypodermic syringe, which is provided with the needle fitted and sheathed, provides automatic retraction of the needle after use. The syringe may be supplied pre-charged with an injectant. The completion of the injection stroke attaches the piston to the needle carrier and subsequently dislodges a retaining ring thereby freeing the piston from the plunger and releasing stored energy of a spring or the like to draw the piston and needle carrier into the plunger. The plunger is positively retained inside the housing by the interaction of rings. Alternative methods of locating the needle carrier during use and of attaching the piston to the needle carrier to enable retraction are shown. An alternative method of retaining the piston on the plunger is also shown. A further configuration is shown affording the use of an offset needle. The syringe has optional features to prevent unwanted inward movement of the plunger and to prevent seepage of liquid after use.

Hypodermic syringes

A controller circuit ( ) for processing video data for an active matrix liquid crystal display device has processing circuitry for performing correction functions on the input video data (D) prior to being supplied to the drive circuit ( ) of the display device comprising gamma and color correction, and correction for reducing motion blur in the display picture. The correction circuits ( ) are organized such that correction for motion blur reduction ( ) is carried out before the gamma and color corrections ( ), which enables a beneficial decrease in semiconductor area required when implementing the circuitry in IC form through the size of field store ( ) and LUT ( ) components used for this function then being smaller. Gamma and color corrections are performed together using a single LUT. Correction for kickback may further be included, such correction preferably being arranged after the gamma and color corrections and using a separate LUT.

Controller circuit for liquid crystal matrix display devices

LC display device based on &ldquo;plane switching&rdquo;, in which the switching speed is increased by overdriving the pixels upon a change of the voltage across these pixels while taking, for example, the hydrodynamical properties of the LC material into account. The correction means may also correct for changes of ambient or liquid temperature.

Display device

An autostereoscopic display apparatus includes a matrix display panel (10), preferably an active matrix liquid crystal display panel, having display elements (12) in rows and columns and arranged in groups of at least three adjacent display elements, and an optical director (15) in the form of, for example, a lenticular screen overlying the panel (10) and having lenticules (16) extending in the column direction with each lenticule overlying an associated display element group, in which adjacent display elements in a group are arranged so as to partly overlap one another in the column direction (Y). The display elements in a group can, for example, be arranged in a line in the row direction (X) and shaped as non-rectangular parallelograms, or triangles, successive ones being inverted, or interdigitated, or arranged in two or more rows. As a result, unwanted display artifacts such as dark banding caused by black matrix extending between columns of display elements is eliminated and the transition between stereoscopic views is smoothed due to an image merging effect as a viewer's head moves in the row direction.

Autostereoscopic display apparatus

A high definition television signal from a source such as a television camera (1) is applied to three parallel processing branches the operation of each branch being determined by a range of motion. An 80 ms branch (3, 4, 5) and a 20 ms branch (6, 7, 8) each respectively have a two dimensional low pass filter, a sub-sampler and a line shuffler. A 40 ms branch (9,10) only has a two dimensional filter and a sub-sampler. A motion estimator (14) determines the degree of movement of picture blocks and a decision unit (13) decides on the appropriate branch, the motion vectors for the 20 ms and 40 ms branch and the blocks to which these are applied. This information is applied to a DATV formatting device (15) which produces a menu of motion vectors and codewords for each block. A switch (11) selects the appropriate branch for each block.

Method and apparatus for processing a high definition television signal

A television signal for a television transmission system conveys a motion information signal in addition to the vision signal. At the transmission side each field of a picture is subdivided into a plurality of regions and up to a given number of the most dominant motion vectors appropriate to a region are generated. These motion vectors are transmitted as the motion information signal and in a receiver are separated from the television signal in a decoder (12). The spatially offset pixels are identified in a first spatial offset circuit (14) from a vision signal delayed by a picture memory (16) and compared in a picture information comparison circuit (17) with pixels in the corresponding field of the current picture to identify the motion vector indicating the pixel of corresponding magnitude. This is applied to an input of a second spatial offset circuit (19) a second input of which receives the delayed vision signal to produce motion compensated pixels which together with pixels from the current vision signal are up-converted and interpolated in a unit (18) to produce an up-converted vision signal.

Method and apparatus for providing an enhanced television signal

A high definition color television transmission system in which wide band luminance information (Y, FIG. 1) is divided to produce a first luminance information portion (below 3.8 MHz) and a second luminance information portion (between 3.8 and 8.8 MHz). The first luminance information portion (Y1, FIG. 2) is transmitted by way of a first transmission path together with a color subcarrier (f.sub.sc) modulated by color information. The bandwidth of the color information is such that the modulation components lie outside the bandwidth of the first luminance information portion. The second and higher frequency luminance information portion is frequency shifted to lie within 0 and 5 MHz (Y2, FIG. 3) and is transmitted by way of a second transmission path. The two transmissions may also carry sound signals (f.sub.S1, FIG. 2; f.sub.S2, FIG. 3). The two transmissions may be jointly received for the provision of a high definition display but the invention has the distinct advantage that the signal of the first transmission path may be received alone by currently manufactured television receivers for reproduction of a display of a quality which is currently acceptable.

Television transmission system

A length weighted interdigital transducer has .lambda./2 spaced electrodes within the overlap region. Outside the overlap region, the overlapping .lambda./2 spaced electrodes are connected to the bus bars by pairs of .lambda./4 spaced electrodes and extra 'dummy' pairs of .lambda./4 spaced electrodes are also connected to the bus bars. The .lambda./2 spaced electrodes give a good manufacturing yield, and the .lambda./4 spaced pairs of electrodes and pairs of dummy electrodes provide compensation for wavefront distortion combined with low 'interactions.'

Acoustic surface wave devices

An acoustic surface wave device having an interdigital array of parallel electrodes includes a set of four parallel active electrodes spaced apart and with a transverse overlap. The second and third electrodes are aligned. The first and third and second and fourth electrodes are respectively connected together and to corresponding other electrodes of the electrode array.

Acoustic surface-wave devices

A surface wave TV I.F. filter has a transducer with two passbands. Each is unsymmetrical with respect to itself and a mirror image of the other. A second transducer suppresses one of the passbands.
