A wheeled device, and method of making thereof, that simulates the feel and performance of alpine skiing/snowboarding on dry land is provided. Features of embodiments include: (1) a deck having flex similar to that of a ski/snowboard; (2) placement of wheels in a geometry mimicking the side cut of a shaped alpine ski/snowboard, and that with feature (1), enables a user to turn the device in an arc; and (3) wheels constructed of materials of varied coefficients of friction, which enable a user to skid the device in a braking mechanism similar to that of an alpine ski/snowboard, with the placement and design of the wheels emulating the base edge bevel of a typical snow-ski/snowboard. In an embodiment, the device is affixed to a user's feet using a binding device similar to that used for alpine skiing/snowboarding, and the user primarily relies on gravity on an inclined plane for locomotion.

A sheet of cellulose based material having enhanced strength, particularly the dry strength, substantially unaffected repulpability is disclosed. The sheet of cellulose based materials generally includes a first cellulose based material connected with a second cellulose base material element. The first cellulose based material is formed by separating a portion of the fiber from a furnish, treating the separated portion with a cationic wet strength resin which is allowed to bond to the fiber. The treated fiber is then mixed with the untreated balance of the fiber at some point before the paper machine. The fiber that is separated may be secondary fiber, virgin fiber or combinations thereof. The second cellulose base material element is substantially free from any treatment. The second cellulose base material element may be include substantially all untreated fibers.

The artificial fire logs are made from cellulosic materials, a lignin containing composition and a non-petroleum based wax where the lignin containing composition comprises lignin and 1,3-propanediol derived from a renewable resource.

The present disclosure includes methods for enhancing hardness and dimensional stability of a wood element. In one embodiment, the method includes placing the wood element in a compression assembly set to a compression temperature between about 365&#xb0; F. and about 410&#xb0; F., heating and compressing the wood element without exceeding the species' threshold pressure value to produce a compressed wood product, heating the compressed wood product to a post-compression temperature between about 275&#xb0; F. and about 350&#xb0; F., and holding the compressed wood product at the post-compression temperature for about 30 to about 48 hours. The disclosure also includes a wood product having enhanced hardness.

A method for bonding composite wood products comprises using a PMDI adhesive modified with a polar compound such as a lower alkylene carbonate or triacetin with a combination of conductive thermal heat and radio frequency energy. Propylene carbonate is a preferred modifier. Press temperatures and pressing times may be significantly reduced from those using either unmodified PMDI adhesives or the modified adhesives without radio frequency energy. Laminated veneer products 38 mm in thickness can be pressed at 110&deg;-120&deg; C. in as little as 7 minutes using radio frequency energy at a level of about 32 kw/m .

Method for bonding composite wood products

A polyethylene glycol-containing paper is described. The paper includes polyethylene glycol (PEG) having an average molar mass in the range of from about 30,000 to about 50,000. In one embodiment, polyethylene glycol is incorporated into the paper during the paper's formation. In another embodiment, a polyethylene glycol-coated paper is provided. Methods for forming polyethylene glycol-containing papers are also described.

New and useful products are based on sheeted cellulose impregnated with a polyfunctional isocyanate and a fire retardant material. The fire retardants are chosen from organophosphorous esters compatible with the isocyanate in the proportions used. Preferred impregnating compositions use about one part of isocyanate and two parts of a halogenated diphosphate ester. Other compatible phosphorous based materials may be included for viscosity control.

The invention is a method of enhancing the strength of paper products, particularly the dry strength, without adversely affecting repulpability. It is also directed to the resulting products. It is particularly applicable but not limited to products with significant amounts of secondary fiber in the furnish. Preferably, about 10-30% of the fiber is separated from the furnish at some point prior to sheeting. This is treated with a cationic wet strength resin which is allowed to bond to the fiber. Cationic polyamide-epichlorohydrin resins are particularly useful. The treated fiber is them mixed with the untreated balance of the fiber at some point before the paper machine. Screnning fines on repulping do not normally exceed 2-3%.

Method of enhancing strength of paper products and the resulting products

A method of producing a surfaced composite panel of cellulosic particulates, such as wood flakes, involves the application of polymer forming foamable material to at least one of the first and second major surfaces of the panel, contacting said at least one of the first and second surfaces with a pressure applying surface to apply pressure thereto, foaming the polymer forming foamable material while pressure is applied and curing the applied foam material to produce a polymeric coating on the panel with the desired surface, which is typically extremely smooth. One or both surfaces may be surface treated in this manner. A skin formed on the surface of the panel is believed to add to the strength and stiffness of the coating on the panel. A wide variety of foaming systems may be used to accomplish this surface treating. By avoiding sanding the surface treated panel, the skin remains intact. The resulting panel, in addition to being extremely smooth as desired, resists water penetration when subjected to water or high humidity conditions. The resulting panel is receptive to adhesives for purposes of securing overlaying materials such as vinyl, reduces formaldehyde emissions when a panel formed of the resin which emits formaldehydes is surface treated.

Method of forming a surfaced cellulosic composite panel

The invention is directed to a composition of matter useful as a paper impregnant, to the method of its use, and to the products produced by the method. Poly (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) or PMDI has been used in the past as a paper impregnant with or without propylene carbonate as a diluent. These products have generally required pressing under high pressures and at elevated temperatures. It has now been found that triacetin and/or triethyl citrate in usages up to about 20% of PMDI give superior performance in impregnated products. The modified PMDI will cure at essentially ambient conditions in times as short as 1-2 days to insoluble polyureas with low residual amounts of isocyanates and reaction byproducts such as 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane. The treated papers can be used in applications of which skins for sandwich panels and high strength corrugated board would be exemplary.

Isocyanate impregnating compositions

The invention relates to paper and similar products made with at least a portion of the papermaking furnish being essentially water insoluble carboxyethyl cellulose fibers. A cationic additive material, such as a polyamide epichlorohydrin wet strength resin or cationic starch, is also required. From 2-100% of the modified fiber is used in conjunction with a usual papermaking fiber. The D.S. of the carboxyethylated fiber is in the range of about 0.01-0.3, preferably about 0.025-0.10. A notable feature of paper products made with the fiber/cationic additive system is an improved ratio of wet to dry tensile and burst strengths compared with sheets made from unmodified fiber.

Paper and paper-like products including water insoluble fibrous

Wood veneers having enhanced strength and/or stiffness, wood products made therefrom, and methods for manufacturing such veneers and wood products are disclosed. A treated veneer having enhanced strength and stiffness has a population of compacted wood cells extending across at least a portion of the length and width dimensions and into the thickness dimension of the veneer to confer an increased density level, and thus increased strength and/or stiffness levels, to the veneer. Interspersed in the compacted wood cells is a non-saturating loading level of a cured rigid thermoset material which maintains compaction of the compacted cells even after prolonged soaking in water. The preferred loading level is just what is required to maintain compaction of the cells. The preferred thermoset material is polyurea which is formed from a polyisocyanate resin applied to at least one major surface of the veneer followed by hot-pressing the veneer. The strength and/or stiffness increase, compared to untreated veneer, is about 10 to 150 percent. Treated veneers can be made into various multiple-ply wood products such as laminated veneer lumber and plywood, thereby providing a way to convert relatively weak lumber from fast-grown trees into premium-grade construction material.
