Provided are sorbents and associated methods and systems for removing mercury from process gases or fluid streams. The sorbents may include activated carbon and pyrite. The sorbents may optionally include one or more additives, such as a halide salt.

A magnetic adsorbent, including an admixture of an adsorbent and a magnetic material. A system for removing mercury from a fluid stream, the system including, a magnetic adsorbent injection unit for injecting an admixture of powdered activated carbon and magnetic material into the fluid stream; and a particulate removal unit. A system for cleaning flue gas, the system including a particulate removal system; an additive injector positioned downstream of the particulate removal system, for injecting an additive into the flue gas; a powdered sorbent injector positioned downstream of the additive injector, for injecting powdered sorbents, wherein no powdered sorbent injectors are positioned upstream of the particulate removal system; and a flue gas desulfurization system positioned downstream from the powdered sorbent injector, wherein no other processing apparatus is located between the powdered sorbent injector and the flue gas desulfurization system.

A system for cleaning flue gas includes a particulate removal system; a powdered sorbent injector, for injecting powdered sorbents, positioned downstream from the particulate removal system; and a flue gas desulfurization system positioned downstream from the powdered sorbent injector.

A system and method for purifying air via low-energy, in-situ regenerated silica-titania composites is described. The silica-titania composites can be synthesized with various pore sizes, photocatalyst loadings, and surface area, and can be applied in pellet/granular form or powdered and coated onto a surface. The system may operate with continuous UV irradiation for continuous oxidation of pollutants and inactivation of pathogens. Alternatively, the system may operate with intermittent UV irradiation, whereby pollutants are adsorbed in the absence of light, followed by oxidation of sorbed pollutants and regeneration of silica-titania composites upon irradiation with UV light. The oxidation/regeneration step may or may not incorporate sweep air. This system and method may be used for removing pollutants, such as Volatile Organic Compounds, from aircraft cabins, space exploration vehicles and architectures, mass transit vehicles, and residential and commercial buildings.

Magnetic activated carbon and the removal of contaminants from a fluid stream using the magnetic activated carbon is described. The magnetic activated carbon is preferably magnetic powdered activated carbon and may contain titania. The magnetic activated carbon may be used to remove contaminants such as mercury from fluid streams including flue gases from a combustion plant.

A method for removing mercury from a fluid stream includes the steps of providing a porous composite material comprising a substrate and a plurality of catalyst and/or photocatalyst particles, and contacting substrate with a fluid stream. The porous composite material adsorbs and/or then oxidizes or reduces metallic species including elemental mercury. A fossil fuel fired power plant can include an emission control device comprising the porous composite material to filter flue gas to and thereby minimize mercury emissions into the environment.

Method for mercury capture from fluid streams

An activated carbon that is capable of adsorbing taste-and-odor-causing and other organic compounds, wherein the activated carbon comprises a uniquely modified carbonaceous material. The activated carbon comprising: (a) a pore volume per gram of the activated carbon more than about 0.32 mL in the pore width range between about 4 to 63 angstroms; and (b) a pore volume per gram of the activated carbon more than about 0.21 mL in the pore width range between about 63 to 500 angstroms; provided that the pore volume per gram of the activated carbon in the pore width range of about 20 to 63 angstroms is at least about 25% of the total pore volume per gram of the activated carbon in the pore width range of 4 to 63 angstroms, as measured per the Argon Adsorption Density Functional Theory protocol; provided that the activated carbon has a pH equal to or greater than 9.9, when immersed as a slurry in nitrogen-purged deionized distilled water, while the slurry contains about 10% by weight of activated carbon, as measured per the Slurry pH protocol.

Method of heat treating carbonaceous material to enhance its adsorption of taste-and-odor-causing and other organic compounds from water

The present invention generally relates to a method of thermally reactivating activated carbon via a two-step process: steam followed by pyrolysis; whereby the steam is preferably deoxygenated. Activated carbons reactivated by this method resemble their virgin counterpart's physical characteristics (e.g., BET surface area) and often perform better in water treatment. The present invention also includes a method of reactivating activated carbon via conventional processes (i.e. pyrolysis followed by steam) at low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. The third aspect of the present invention is the activation of carbonaceous material comprising of steam treating the carbonaceous material followed by pyrolysis.
