Connection structures on an extra-vascular electrode lead body improve strain relief and strengthen the transition region where electrical conductors carried by the lead body are joined to individual electrodes at the distal end of the lead. The electrodes include structure or mechanisms for externally securing the electrode assembly to a body part. A first connection structure is located on the lead body proximal the electrodes to anchor the lead body to a first anchor location in the body that generally moves in concert with the body part. A second connection structure is located on the lead body proximal to the first connection structure to anchor the lead body to a second anchor location that is at least partially independent of movement of the body part. The first and second anchor location are offset by a distance that is less than a distance between the first and second connection structures to provide strain relief for the electrodes.

A body compatible stent is formed of multiple filaments arranged in at least two sets of oppositely directed helical windings interwoven with one another in a braided configuration. Each of the filaments is a composite including a central core and a case surrounding the core. In the more preferred version, the core is formed of a radiopaque and relatively ductile material, e.g. tantalum or platinum. The outer case is formed of a relatively resilient material, e.g. a cobalt/chromium based alloy. Favorable mechanical characteristics of the stent are determined by the case, while the core enables in vivo imaging of the stent. The composite filaments are formed by a drawn filled tubing process in which the core is inserted into a tubular case of a diameter substantially more than the intended final filament diameter. The composite filament is cold-worked in several steps to reduce its diameter, and annealed between successive cold-working steps. After the final cold working step, the composite filament is formed into the desired shape and age hardened. Alternative composite filaments employ an intermediate barrier layer between the case and core, a biocompatible cover layer surrounding the case, and a radiopaque case surrounding a structural core.

An implantable electrical lead having a lead body with a longitudinal lumen therein and a stranded electrical conductor located in the lumen and which exits the lumen at a distal portion of the lead body, the distal end of the conductor being curved to form a loop and reentering the lumen, terminating within the lumen alongside a more proximal portion of the conductor. The portion of the conductor exterior to the lumen is wound around the lead body to form a coiled electrode. In some embodiments the distal end of the conductor is coupled to a more proximal portion of the conductor to form a loop and the loop is wound around the lead body to form a bifilar coil. In other embodiments the conductor is wound around the lead body to form a mono-filar coil. The distal end of the conductor is mechanically and electrically coupled to a more proximal portion of the conductor, within the lumen.

A biomedical lead conductor body formed of a coiled wire conductor that is sheathed loosely within a coiled insulative sheath of biocompatible and biostable material allowing a gap or space to be present between the exterior surface of the coiled wire conductor and the adjacent interior surface of the insulative sheath. The coiled insulative sheath is loosely fitted around the coiled wire conductor in order to compensate for defects in the coiled insulative sheath by spreading any corrosion of the wire that may take place because of the defect away from the site of a defect and along the surface of the coiled wire conductor. The lead body is incorporated into unipolar, bipolar or multi-polar biomedical leads having single filar coil windings, or multi-filar coil windings that may be redundantly electrically connected. The coiled wire conductors and coiled insulative sheaths may be parallel-wound and/or coaxially wound within the outer lead body insulative sheath. The individual coiled wire conductors may be formed of single filar wire or multi-filar wire cable and formed of single composition or composite conductive metals. The proximal and distal wire ends of the coiled wire conductors that are electrically connected in common are connected to lead connector elements and operative elements, respectively.

A biomedical lead conductor cable formed of a core wire strand and a plurality of perimeter wire strands wrapped in a helical pattern around the core wire strand, wherein the core wire strand is formed of M wires and the perimeter wire strands are formed of N wires. The core wire strand is formed of a first core wire and M-1 first peripheral wires helically wrapped about the first core wire in a non-overlapping manner, the first core wire having a mechanical strength exceeding the mechanical strength of each first peripheral wire and an electrical conductivity lower than the electrical conductivity of each first peripheral wire. Each perimeter wire strand is formed of a second core wire and N-1 second peripheral wires helically wrapped about the second core wire in a non-overlapping manner, the second core wire conductor having a mechanical strength exceeding the mechanical strength of each second peripheral wire and an electrical conductivity lower than the electrical conductivity of each second peripheral wire. In a preferred embodiment M=N, and the first core wire is formed of a solid metal or metal alloy, whereas first peripheral wires are formed of a composite conductor wire having a core of high conductivity material surrounded by a cladding of lower conductivity material. The second core wire is also preferably formed of a composite conductor wire. The diameters of the first and second core wires exceed the diameters of the first and second peripheral wires, respectively to provide a spacing between adjacent peripheral wires wound helically about the core wires. Moreover, preferably, the diameter of the core wire strand exceeds the diameter of the perimeter wire strands to provide a spacing between the adjacent perimeter wire strands wound about the core wire strand.

Yet another alternative composite filament features a radiopaque case surrounding a structural core.

An adapter for extending a sensing and stimulation delivery lead in a body stimulation system, such as a cardiac pacer or cardioverter defibrillator, includes a resilient, electrically insulative housing with a longitudinal barrel extended through the majority of the housing length for the insertion of a lead terminal connector. Two spaced apart transverse bores are formed in the housing, open to barrel and to the housing exterior. Two connector assemblies are mounted in the housing and positioned to receive respective pin and ring terminals of the lead when inserted into the barrel. Each connector assembly can be adjusted to secure the lead in the housing, by a tool inserted through one of the transverse bores. Each connector assembly is isolated from the housing exterior by a seal means mounted in the associated bore. Each seal means includes a seal member elastically deformable to admit a tool to the associated connector assembly via a passage through the seal member. A rigid retaining sleeve, secured within the associated bore, surrounds and slightly compresses its associated seal member to ensure that the passage remains closed when not admitting the tool.
