There is herein described a method of making a single crystal wavelength conversion element from a polycrystalline wavelength conversion element, a single crystal wavelength conversion element, and a light source containing same. By making the single crystal wavelength conversion element from a polycrystalline wavelength conversion element, the method provides greater flexibility in creating single crystal wavelength conversion elements as compared to melt grown methods for forming single crystals. Advantages may include higher activator contents, forming more complex shapes without machining, providing a wider range of possible activator gradients and higher growth rates at lower temperatures.

Disclosed herein are wavelength converting compositions, wavelength converters and light sources including the same. The wavelength converting compositions include at least one poly(silphenylene-siloxane) gel matrix that contains at least one wavelength conversion material, such as one or more phosphors in powdered and/or particulate form. Methods of making such compositions and converters are also disclosed. Wavelength converted light sources such as wavelength converted light emitting diode packages are also disclosed. The poly(silphenylene-siloxane) gel matrix exhibits relatively high thermal stability, as well as desirable optical properties.

A silicone-grafted core-shell particle is described wherein the silicone-grafted core-shell particle comprises a core of an inorganic particle and a shell of a grafted poly(dimethylsiloxane) polymer formed from a bi-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) having reactive groups at each terminal end. The silicone-grafted core-shell particles may be dispersed in a polysiloxane polymer matrix and employed as an LED encapsulant.

Structures for transitioning between two layers of differing lattice parameters are disclosed. In some embodiments, the structures are in the form of a superlattice that serves as a strain relieving transition between two layers of differing lattice parameters. By controlling the properties of the superlattice, the superlattice can exhibit desirable properties such as transparency to light and lattice matching to one of the two layers of differing lattice parameters. The standard tool is the rectangular parallelepiped having the determined birefringence for the measurement distance. The method can be used to make a set of the standard tools with different measurement distances.

A polariscope that measures stress in glass and that is adapted to be hand-carried includes a lightweight, C-shaped housing with a sequential arrangement of a battery-powered LED light source, a first polarizer, a full wave plate at one distal end, and a second polarizer at a second distal end. The housing includes a hand-grip that houses a battery, where the battery is selectively connected to the LED light source with a switch carried on the hand-grip. The sequential arrangement of light source, first polarizer and full wave plate at the first distal end is less than two inches thick. The polariscope weighs less than two pounds and does not require an external power source.

An LED polarimeter is described which is suitable for measuring the stress in photoelastic materials. The polarimeter comprises a sequential arrangement of an LED light source, a first polarizer, a &#xbc; wave plate, and a second polarizer substantially aligned along a central axis. The relatively monochromatic LED light source essentially eliminates errors caused by chromatic abberations and heat damage to the polarizing film. Preferrably, the LED light source emits in the green region of the visible spectrum to take advantage of the sensitivity of the human eye to this part of the spectrum.
