A procedure for evaluating a network, and a system, apparatus, and computer program that operate in accordance with the procedure. The procedure includes aggregating packet information from one or more sources in a network, and executing a correlation algorithm to determine traffic flow information based on the packet information. The aggregating includes obtaining information from a header of a packet being communicated in the network, in one example embodiment. In another example, the executing includes tracing a traffic flow from a source node to a destination node, and the tracing includes determining, based on the packet information, each link by which the traffic flow is communicated from the source node to the destination node.

System, apparatus, procedure, and computer program product for planning and simulating an internet protocol network

Method and apparatus of a network configuration configured to permit a dense wavelength division multiplexing ('DWDM') element to connect to a storage server, an Internet Protocol ('IP') router, and DWDM network are disclosed. The configuration includes the DWDM network, storage area network (&#x201c;SAN&#x201d;) server, IP router, and optical transport network (&#x201c;OTN&#x201d;) switch. While the DWDM network transports information via optical fibers, the DWDM switch is coupled to the DWDM network for transporting optical signals. The SAN server is coupled to a port of the DWDM switch and is configured to store data at a remote location. The IP router which is coupled to the DWDM switch facilitates IP traffic between a user and the DWDM network. The OTN switch, coupled to the first DWDM switch, is capable of processing at least a portion of the optical signals.

Method and apparatus for improving connectivity between optical devices using software defined networking

A method for routing C-band and L-band optical signals, and a system, apparatus, and computer program that operate in accordance with the method. The method comprises selecting one or more C-band optical signals using one or more C-band components, resulting in one or more selected C-band optical signals. One or more L-band optical signals are selected using one or more L-band components, resulting in one or more selected L-band optical signals. The selected C-band and L-band optical signals are combined.

Reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer network element for C-band and L-band optical signals

When planning and maintaining a network, it may be very difficult for a network provider to organize variations of equipment rack installations at several different sites. Present methods of planning installation configurations in a network involve planning the same equipment installation configuration at all sites, planning a limited number of variations, or planning multiple variations but, with difficulty, tracking and changing configurations. A method or corresponding apparatus in an example embodiment of the present invention provides a tool for simplifying the planning of multiple network element installation configurations at multiple sites within a network. The benefits include fewer required truck rolls, resulting in reduced costs before and after deployment of installation configurations. In one embodiment, the disclosed planning tool allows users to access and change generic installation configurations according to customizable options to allow users to produce and store customized templates of multiple network element installation configurations.

Method and apparatus for simplifying planning and tracking of multiple installation configurations

A method, apparatus, system, and computer program, for operating a network planning tool. The method includes recognizing at least one predetermined criteria being satisfied or triggered, and learning at least one network attribute, to be used in subsequent network planning. Various types of network attributes can be learned, such as, e.g., network element parameters, site parameters, link parameters, demand parameters, optical parameters, general parameters, and networking parameters. Example attributes may specify, e.g., a maximum number of add/drop channels, at least one alarm threshold, a maximum number of sites per network ring, a maximum number of add/drop sites per ring, and a maximum ring circumference. Others can specify a maximum light path distance, a routing tendency, at least one grooming node, or the like.

Procedure, apparatus, system, and computer program for network planning

Due to demand for more network bandwidth, a need for multi-user optical network topologies has, and will continue to, increase. A method or corresponding apparatus in embodiments of the present invention provide for an availability determination tool for determining and displaying wavelength and subrate availabilities within a network. Benefits of embodiments of a tool include allowing a user to identify the availability and capacity of any wavelength on any network, via an interactive graphical user interface, such as by using three-dimensional representations. In one embodiment, the disclosed availability determination tool allows users to locate and view any combination of available wavelengths between nodes in an optical network topology, and generate graphical and tabular reports of the availability in order to maintain an efficient and organized method or apparatus for determining and controlling wavelengths in a network. Consequently, service providers using the tool can keep performance rates high and costs low.

A method to provision routes in a network having a plurality of nodes and a plurality of links connecting various nodes. The method includes determining a route between a designated source node and a designated destination node based on a preselected routing algorithm and one of (i) a designated node of interest and (ii) a designated link of interest, and outputting information indicating the determined route.

Method and apparatus for interactive routing

Signals propagating in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks suffer from loss, which decreases optical signal-to-noise ratios (OSNRs) and degrades a quality of received transmissions. Present methods of boosting OSNRs involve regeneration using transponders, which scale in complexity with the number of WDM channels. Optical amplifiers may boost signal strength, but amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise often reduces OSNR despite increases in signal strength, although changing the amplifier operating settings may reduce emitted ASE noise power. A method or corresponding apparatus in an example embodiment of the present invention provides a planning tool for deploying optical amplifiers in an optical network in a manner that reduces the need for optical regeneration, reducing cost and complexity of the deployed network. In one embodiment, the disclosed planning tool may substitute models of high-gain amplifiers operating at low settings for models of low-gain amplifiers operating at high settings.

The method may include determining all possible rings in the network satisfying a predetermined condition and calculating a utilization score for each possible ring based on a combination of predetermined selection criteria. The method may include selecting the possible ring with the highest utilization score and determining whether there are remaining nodes among the plurality of nodes that are not included in the selected possible ring. The method may further include selecting another possible ring if it is determined there are remaining nodes.
