An intraoperative imaging system combines a gamma probe and an ultrasound probe. The probes are linked to provide co-registration of gamma radiation detected by the gamma probe with an image acquired by the ultrasound probe. The gamma probe has a converging collimator made of a metal block having a plurality of channels therein, which converge from an output face toward an input face. Each channel extends between and opens out at the faces such that openings at the input face have smaller cross-sectional areas than openings at the output face so that each channel tapers inwardly from the output face to the input face. The collimator has an external focal point distant from the input face. The system improves identification and localization of cancerous cells, facilitating more accurate biopsy data and more complete surgical resection. The gamma probe increases sensitivity, while maintaining spatial resolution, and increasing depth of view.

The wireless capacitive load cell features a two-component strain member has a spring body and force transduction plate, which deforms when a load is applied to the structure. During loading, the force transduction plate moves the cantilever spring body out of a position of rest, which results in an indenter, located within the force transduction plate, contacting a capacitive transducer. The capacitive transducer converts deformation of the strain member into an electrical signal which is correlated to a specific load value. The microelectromechanical system that accompanies the capacitive transducer processes and prepares the signal for wireless transmission. The microelectromechanical system has a capacitive transducer, signal conditioner, microcontroller unit, and telemetry system. Additional embodiments of the wireless load cell may include acceleration and temperature sensors embedded within the microelectromechanical system. The spring body features hard stops to prevent excessive deformation which can be harmful to the capacitive transducer.

3D printing in MRI-compatible plastic resin has been used to fabricate and implement a geometric distortion phantom for MRI and CT imaging. The sparse grid structure provides a rigid and accurate phantom with identifiable intersections that are larger than the supporting members, which produces images that are amenable to fully automated quantitative analysis using morphometric erosion, greyscale segmentation and centroiding. This approach produces a 3D vector map of geometric distortion that is useful in clinical applications where geometric accuracy is important, either in routine quality assurance or as a component of distortion correction utilities.

Method and apparatus for measuring 3D geometric distortion in MRI and CT images with a 3D physical phantom

Laboratory optical imaging systems for fluorescence and bioluminescence use a sensitive charge-coupled device (CCD) camera to produce quantitative measurements of very low light intensity, detecting signals from specimens labeled with optical fluorophores or luminescent emitters. Commercially available systems typically provide quantitative measurements of light output, in units of radiance (photons scmSR) or intensity (photons scm). We describe a quality assurance system for low-light imagers, based on an LED-illuminated thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display module. The light intensity is controlled by pulse-width modulation of the backlight, producing intensity values ranging from 1&#xd7;10photons scmto 4&#xd7;10photons scm. The lowest light intensity values are produced by very short backlight pulses (i.e. approximately 10 &#x3bc;s), repeated every 300 s. This light source provides a stable, traceable intensity standard that can be used for routine quality assurance of optical imaging systems.

A calibration cage for use in Roentgen Stereophotogrammetric Analysis (RSA), comprising a biplanar configuration of two compartments, each with a fiducial plate at the bottom and a control plate at the top and parallel thereto, the fiducial and control plates of one compartment being oriented at approximately 90&#xb0; to fiducial and control plates of the other compartment such that a region of interest is positioned on one side of the fiducial and control plates of both compartments.

Radiostereometric calibration cage

A technique for pulsed-injection of radiographic contrast agent uses a pressurized source of contrast agent interrupted by a rotary valve at rates ranging from 1 to 30 Hz. This produces well-defined boli at the end of the catheter. The position of these boli is recorded by a digital radiographic system and analyzed to produce quantitative measurements of blood velocity and flow rate throughout the cardiac cycle.
