An improved, nonwoven fabric is constructed to have superior cloth-like characteristics including superior tear resistance, liquid absorbency, resistance to linting, resistance to separation of the fabric areas, flexibility, and softness. Said nonwoven fabric is comprised of at least one intermediate area of absorbent fibers sandwiched between a first outer area of reinforcing fibers and a second outer area containing of melt fibers. The areas of the nonwoven fabric of the present invention are bonded together first by needling and then by a heat treatment that melts at least some of the melt fibers.

A flexible tear resistance composite sheet material is disclosed comprising a web of thermoplastic microfibers with from 35 to 80 percent by weight of staple fibers homogeneously dispersed throughout the web. The composite is subjected to a sufficient quantity of heat and pressure such that the thermoplastic microfibers at least partially melt and compact into a contiguous sheet with the intact staple fibers being dispersed therein. Located throughout the sheet are a plurality of voids which act as tear stops. The resulting material has a void volume of about 33 to about 55 percent and a machine direction slit trapezoidal tear resistance greater than or equal to 1.7 kg per 100 g/m.sup.2 equivalent basis weight. There is disclosed a synthetic sheet composite that is tear resistant and has paper-like aesthetic qualities. The composite comprises two spun filament polymer webs of unbonded continuous filaments with a binder web sandwiched between. The binder has a melting point below that of the spun filament webs. When the composite is subjected to heat and pressure the binder melts, and fills the interstital space between the filaments, and binds the filaments together. The filaments are encapsulated within the composite but retain their discrete identity. The filaments at the surface are exposed, flattened, discrete, and adhered to the binder.

Methods and apparatus are disclosed incorporating a design into the skin of a apple or other fruits or vegetables with a photochemically reactive skin or surface by covering the apples while still on the tree with a bag having a reflective outer surface and a non-reflective inner surface. The bag has at least one aperture to allow for the drainage of fluids out of the bag, and further has a light barrier positioned to block light from entering through the aperture into the interior of the bag. The bagged apples are harvested and transferred to a substantially light-exclusive environment where the bag is removed. A label or symbol is applied to the skin of the apple or fruit and the apple or fruit exposed to artificial light to develop the color of the skin of the apple.
