Compounds are identified that act as crystallization suppressants when added to clear brine fluids, significantly lowering the true crystallization temperatures of the brines, and allowing for higher salt content in clear brine fluids. The crystallization suppressants of the invention also allow for the preparation of higher density zinc free brines. Crystallization suppressant blends are also identified that allow for the preparation of high density clear brine fluids with lower viscosities.

Compounds are identified that act as crystallization suppressants when added to clear brine fluids, significantly lowering the true crystallization temperatures of the brines, and allowing for higher salt content in clear brine fluids. The crystallization suppressants of the invention also allow for the preparation of higher density zinc free brines.

High densitiy clear brine fluids

Bromine containing compounds, such as calcium bromide, sodium bromide and the like, are prepared in high purity and more quickly with less waste by using a process with two bromination stages and often a third step wherein the crude product mixture can be adjusted to meet specific product requirements. In the first bromination stage, the majority, but not all, of a substrate is brominated using a reductive bromination reaction, the remaining unreacted substrate is converted to product in the second stage through another a reductive bromination reaction, although the specific reagents may be different, wherein the addition of bromine and a reducing agent are carefully monitored.

In a process for producing a tetrabromophthalic diester composition, a liquid reaction mixture is prepared comprising tetrabromophthalic anhydride (TBPA), a Cto Cpolyhydric aliphatic alcohol (PAA) and an alkylene oxide (AO) selected from the group consisting of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, said reaction mixture being substantially free of an organic solvent. While agitating the reaction mixture, the temperature of the reaction mixture is raised to at least 50&#xb0; C. to allow the TBPA to react with the PAA and AO to produce a diester composition. The reaction is terminated when the diester composition has an acid value equal to or less than 0.25 mg KOH/gm of the diester composition.

A method for flame-retarding styrenic resins is disclosed wherein the method comprises incorporating in compositions an effective amount of at least one flame retardant compound comprising both aliphatic and aromatic bromine.

A method for preparing tetrabromobenzoate ester from a tetrabromophthalic anhydride including the steps of reacting the tetrabromophthalic anhydride with a catalyst and an alcohol at a temperature that favors partial esterification over complete esterification of the tetrabromophthalic anhydride to form a tetrabromophthalate half-ester reaction mixture; and feeding the half-ester reaction mixture to at least one reactor having and maintaining a temperature that favors decarboxylation over esterification to produce a tetrabromobenzoate ester-containing product. The temperature favoring partial esterification of the tetrabromophthalic anhydride is between about 70&#xb0; C. and 130&#xb0; C. The temperature favoring decarboxylation over esterification is between about 190&#xb0; C. and 205&#xb0; C. The tetrabromobenzoate ester-containing product comprises at least about 85% tetrabromobenzoate ester. The at least one reactor may include two or more reactors connected to one another in series.

Process for producing tetrabromobenzoate esters

A method of making phosphoric acid esters by continuously reacting a phosphorus oxyhalide with a polyol to produce at least about 60% normalized monomeric halophosphate intermediate, and then reacting the monomeric halophosphate intermediate with an alcohol to produce a desired phosphoric acid ester is provided. In other embodiments, the reaction of the monomeric halophosphate intermediate with the alcohol can also be carried out continuously. Another aspect of the invention provides a method of making phosphoric acid esters by continuously reacting a phosphorus oxyhalide with a monohydric alcohol to produce at least about 60% normalized monohalomonophosphate diester intermediate, and then reacting the monohalomonophosphate diester intermediate with a polyol to produce a phosphoric acid ester. In other embodiments, the reaction of the monohalomonophosphate diester intermediate with the polyol may also be carried out continuously.

Continuous process for the manufacture of phosphoric acid esters

Flame retardancy is provided to polymer resins by adding to the resin a bisaryl diphosphate that has not been purified to remove catalyst or catalyst residue from the product. The bisaryl diphosphate may be prepared by a two-step process that starts with the semi-continuous addition of dry bisphenol A to a heated mixture of phosphorus oxychloride and MgCl, and concludes with the addition of dry phenol to the step one intermediate.
