An optical reader, for example a field of view reader or a flying spot scanner for reading a printed indicia such as a bar code symbol includes a light source and a light detector, and at least two channels associated with the detector for carrying signals corresponding to light detected by the detector at different resolution levels, thus simplifying the decoupling of signals allowing a single reader to be used regardless of the resolution level of the indicia to be read. In order to arrive at an improved signal to noise ratio of a bar code symbol being read, a processor produces two signals at respective first and second channels, the signal in the second channel being buffered and merged with a later signal in the first channel allowing time averaging out of the noise portion of the signal and enhancement of the information portion of the signal. An improved system for detecting defects in a printed bar code symbol includes processing means for comparing the width of a detected space with the width of neighboring spaces and identifying the space as a defect if its width is less than a predetermined proportion of the width of neighboring spaces.

Multi-channel signal processing in an optical reader

A multiple working range scanner includes a collection mirror which is segmented, with each segment having differing optical properties, such as focal length, optical axis, and so on. Differing segments or combinations of segments deal with reflected light received at differing working ranges, and direct it to a photodetector. In another embodiment, beam shaping may be applied to an astigmatic laser beam, for example by means of a part-concave mirror, to create an x waist in the beam which is further from the scanner than the y waist. This provides enhanced performance when the scanner is used on a bar code symbol which is not accurately aligned. In order to provide improved optical alignment within a bar code scanner, the collection mirror may be adjustable both in the x direction and in the y direction.

A unitary body of optical material and associated methods for reading indicia such as bar codes is provided. The unitary body can focus light from a light source into a beam, redirect light reflected from a target to a photodetector, and provide mechanical support for a light source, printed circuit board, or other indicia reader components. In comparison to conventional apparatus, the unitary body requires a reduced number of components and is therefore easier and less expensive to manufacture and assemble. The unitary design increases reliability and performance consistency while decreasing sensitivity to thermal and mechanical loading. Moreover, the unitary body reduces the overall tolerance budget of a reader and therefore facilitates mass production of optical apparatus and readers. The unitary body and associated methods may be implemented in a compact reader with the aforementioned advantages in the form of a pen, or can be integrated into an antenna of a wireless device, such as a cell phone or a PDA.

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for preventing condensation from forming on the internal components of an optical scanner, allowing the scanner to be moved between hot and cold environments without sacrificing scanning performance or damaging the scanner. The optical scanner can be a laser scanner or a solid state imager. One method of preventing moisture from condensing on the inside of a scanner is to control the internal temperature of the scanner. This is accomplished by installing a thermostatically controlled heater module on the inside of the scanner and warming up the scanner's internal air when the air temperature falls below a predetermined point. Another method of preventing moisture from condensing on the inside of the scanner is to hermetically seal the scanning enclosure and fill with inert gas.

An optical scan module, for example for an optical scanner, includes an integrally molded plastics material member which defines not only the laser focusing lens, but also the laser focusing aperture and the collection mirror. In addition, the molded member may act to house and to locate both a semiconductor laser and a photodetector, thereby ensuring easy and accurate placement of those elements within the scanning assembly. The optical assembly may be in modular form, mounted onto a common printed circuit board with a beam scanner.

A terminal for and method of reading indicia employ a hand-held housing, a scanning initiator, a keyboard and a display. The housing has a main portion and a head portion, both having generally rectangular cross-sections. A scan module is mounted on a circuit board that extends through the housing portions. The module includes a base for supporting a light emitter, another circuit board overlying the base, an opening for a light beam from the emitter to pass, and a planar member orthogonal to the base. A sensor having a field of view is mounted on the module. A drive scans the light beam and/or the field of view to read the indicia.

An optical scanner such as a bar code scanner includes a segmented fold mirror, the individual sections of which have different profiles. By directing the scanning laser beam across the fold mirror, a plurality of scan lines are created, at different distances from the scanner. This provides increased flexibility by extending the scanner's working range. In alternative embodiments, a collector mirror and/or a scanning mirror may be segmented. In addition, beam shaping may be provided by reflecting the beam from one or more aplanar surfaces.

The circuit boards carry interconnected electrical circuits which drive individual electrical components within the module. Scanning is initiated by an initiator on the terminal. An elongated, flexible, generally planar spring used for mounting an oscillatable scanning component in an electro-optical scanning module for reading coded indicia is rendered resistant to over flexing during scanning by receiving a pin with radial clearance in an oversized opening, thereby attenuating the effects of external shock forces to the module.

An optical scanning system for scanning indicia having portions of differing light reflectivity has a light emitter assembly, with a single light source, for emitting a beam of light to scan across the indicia. A first optical detector receives light reflected back from a first portion of the indicia. A second optical detector receives light reflected back from a second portion of the indicia. Each of the optical detectors includes a photodetector, a lens and an aperture which is disposed between the photodetector and lens.
