The present invention provides a cutting element having a cylindrical body having a canted end face on which is formed an ultra hard material layer and to a bit incorporating such cutting element. One or a plurality of transition layers may be provided between the ultra hard material layer and the cutting element body.

The present invention provides a cutting element having a cylindrical body having a canted end face on which is formed an ultra hard material layer and a method of forming the same. One or a plurality of transition layers may be provided between the ultra hard material layer and the cutting element body.

Cutting elements having coarse grain substrates and ultra hard material layers are provided. The substrates are formed from coarse grain size particles of tungsten carbide. A method of forming such cutting elements and a drag bit incorporating such cutting elements are also provided.

Cutting element

A method is disclosed for drilling a wellbore. The method includes operating a turbine-type mud motor having a bi-center drill bit coupled to it, and applying an axial force to the bit which is selected so that the bit drills in a directionally stable manner. In one embodiment, the motor is a steerable motor operated to maintain a selected trajectory of the wellbore.

Method for drilling a wellbore using a bi-center drill bit

A variety of large diameter PDC cutters for use in drill bits are disclosed. Specifically, various PDC cutters having a diameter between 19.0 mm and 25.0 mm are disclosed. The various PDC cutters disclosed include an elliptical PDC cutter, wherein a major diameter of the elliptical cutter is selected from a range of 19.0 mm to 25.0 mm, a circular PDC cutter, wherein a diameter of the circular cutter falls between 19.0 mm and 25.0 mm, and a non-planar substrate cutter, wherein a diameter of the non-planar cutter falls between 19.0 mm and 25.0 mm. Additionally, the thickness of the diamond table is increased as compared to prior art PDC cutters. The increase in diamond table thickness results in improved durability and performance.

An earth-boring bit comprises a bit body bit body in which are mounted a plurality of cutting structures inserts, wherein at least a portion of the cutting structures comprise diamond-impregnated inserts having a total thermal exposure of less than 25 minutes above 1500&deg; F. The diamonds can be natural or synthetic diamond. The bit body itself may be diamond-impregnated, in which case it is preferred that the diamonds in the inserts make up at least 40% of the total diamond in the bit.

A drill bit including a bit body and a plurality of blades formed in the bit body. The blades are formed, at least in part, from a base matrix material that on one embodiment is impregnated with abrasive particles. One side of the bit is formed, with respect to its axis of rotation, to a smaller radius than the opposite side of the bit. The asymmetry of the bit enables the bit to drill a larger diameter hole than a pass through diameter of the bit. The opposite side defines a contact angle between the bit and a formation. In one embodiment, the contact angle is at least 140 degrees. In one embodiment, a plurality of inserts may be located on the blades to provide gage protection. In another embodiment, the bit may also include a gage sleeve that helps keep the bit stabilized in the wellbore.

Asymmetric diamond impregnated drill bit

A bi-center drill bit includes pilot and reaming blades affixed to a body at azimuthally spaced locations. The blades have PDC cutters attached at selected positions. In one aspect, the pilot blades form a section having length along the bit axis less than about 80 percent of a diameter of the section. In another aspect, selected pilot blades and corresponding reaming blades are formed into single spiral structures. In another aspect, shapes and positions of the blades and inserts are selected so that lateral forces exerted by the reaming and the pilot sections are balanced as a single structure. Lateral forces are preferably balanced to within 10 percent of the total axial force on the bit. In another aspect, the center of mass of the bit is located less than about 2.5 percent of the diameter of the bit from the axis of rotation. In another aspect, jets are disposed in the reaming section oriented so that their axes are within about 30 degrees of normal to the axis of the bit. In another aspect, the reaming blades are shaped to conform to the radially least extensive, from the longitudinal axis, of a pass-through circle or a drill circle, so the cutters on the reaming blades drill at the drill diameter, without contact to the cutters on the reaming blades when the bit passes through an opening having about the pass-through diameter.
