An anode may be coated with a catalyst layer to improve solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) efficiency and provide lower operating temperatures. The catalyst layer may be highly porous and may be a core-shell structure or a layered structure. The catalyst layer may be deposited on the anode as a nanoframe structure or a cage structure.

Highly porous anode catalyst layer structures for fuel flexible solid oxide fuel cells

A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) includes a cathode having a yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) structure. The YSZ structure is in contact with a solid electrolyte layer. A lanthanum strontium manganite (LSM) structure is deposited on the YSZ structure to form a composite cathode. The cathode includes a catalyst layer. The catalyst layer is a mesoporous nanoionic catalyst material integrated with the YSZ and LSM structures. Alternatively, or in addition to, the mesoporous nanoionic catalyst material may be coated onto the YSZ and LSM structures or embedded into the YSZ and LSM structures. The mesoporous nanoionic catalyst material may form an interconnected fibrous network.

Highly porous cathode catalyst layer structures for flexible solid oxide fuel cell applications in vehicles

A cathode of a solid-oxide fuel cell includes a first ionic conducting layer, a second layer deposited over the first layer and formed from a mixed ionic and electronic conductor layer including an oxygen ion conducting phase, and a third layer deposited over the second layer and formed from a mixed ionic and electronic conductor layer. A sintering aid and pore formers are added to the second layer and the third layer to establish ionic, electronic, and gas diffusion paths that are contiguous. By adjusting the microstructure of the second and the third layer, a high performance low resistance cathode is formed that bonds well to the electrolyte, is highly electro-catalytic, and has a relatively low overall resistance. By using inexpensive and readily available substances as sintering aid and as pore formers, a low-cost cathode is provided.

A method for forming an electrode comprises: combining a platinum precursor with a gold precursor to form an electrode ink; forming the electrode ink into an electrode precursor; firing the electrode precursor to form the electrode; treating the electrode in an environment having an oxygen partial pressure of less than or equal to 500 ppm oxygen for a period of time sufficient produce an electrode with an exposed surface gold concentration of greater than or equal to about 6 times a bulk gold concentration in the electrode.

Methods of treating electrodes and gas sensors comprising the electrodes

A bipolar plate for use in a fuel cell assembly having channels for conveying oxygen and fuel along the cathode and anode surfaces of adjacent fuel cell units. The channels are separated by lands for making electrical and mechanical contact with the respective cathode and anode surfaces and preferably are so configured as to provide the minimum area required for satisfactory electrical contact and mechanical support. The lands and channels preferably are formed as peaks and valleys or as raised or recessed dimples for making electrical/mechanical contact with the cathode and anode surfaces and are coated in those contact areas with corrosion-resistant metal such as gold, platinum, ruthenium, or combinations thereof.
