A universal remote control unit stores signal formatting data which includes an indication of the category of device to which the signal formatting data corresponds. During programming of the universal remote control unit, the user provides a numerical entry which corresponds to the signal formatting data stored in the memory. The universal remote control unit automatically stores the code entered by the user at the appropriate memory location corresponding to the category of device by analyzing the signal format data to which the code corresponds.

A method for location determination using Bluetooth techniques is applicable within buildings, underground or within other structures. A mobile unit ( ) seeks the location of a cell from location master ( ). Location master ( ) and a number of location subsidiaries ( ) determine ranging information with regard to the mobile unit ( ) using Bluetooth techniques. The location master ( ) then determines the mobile unit location using least squares estimation or other triangulation methods ( ). In an alternate embodiment, ranging information is fine tuned for noise and error measurements between the location master and the location subsidiaries ( ) are used.

Location determination for mobile units

A technique and method that efficiently and simultaneously transfers both voice and data information over a single communications link (11). The technique and method utilizes a multi-rate vocoder (12) for providing voice information at a plurality of different rates. Accordingly, the vocoder may be dynamically adjusted during transfer of information to meet channel bandwidth requirements. The technique and method also utilizes a byte-control protocol for inserting voice information within a stream of data information by the use of a data link escape (DLE) byte command (34). Accordingly, voice information is dynamically inserted into an existing stream of data information such that voice information is transferred only upon demand and when needed. This prevents the transfer of useless information, such as voice information when a speaker is silent and, thus, allows for very efficient utilization of system bandwidth.

The calling and called parties determine if the voice identification data compares (26,30). If voice identification data compares, a secure call is enabled (32). If the voice identification data does not compare the communication link is terminated (20).

A security module for use in a cellular telephone provides for low power consumption. The security module includes a vocoder processor for manipulating signals from the telephone's microphone and to the telephone's ear piece; an encryption engine; a modem processor for controlling transmitted and received data from the cellular telephone; and a security system controller. The processors consume virtually no power when the phone is in the standby mode and very little power to produce encrypted communication when the cellular phone is operational.

A cellular voice privacy arrangement includes a digital privacy unit which is part of each subscriber's fixed equipment. The digital privacy unit includes suitable analog to digital and digital to analog converters. A vocoder, digital signal processor and modem provide the privacy. The identification numbers of each terminal (phone) are exclusive-ORed to form a scramble variable. Vocoder data (voice coded information) is exclusive-ORed with the scramble variable to provided scrambled data for transmission.
