Sorbent material sheets are wound around a center core of material that includes additional sorbent. This configuration further increases the packaging efficiency and performance of the sorbent material sheets as part of an overall housing or apparatus. In some embodiments, the sorbent material sheets are arranged in a stacked configuration. Configurations of the sorbent material sheets as part of a canister are also described.

An apparatus is provided for the detection of changes in concentrations or amounts of components of a fluid mixture by measuring changes in an electrical or a mechanical property of a sensing element when the sensing element is exposed to the fluid mixture. The preferred property of the sensing element to be measured is its electrical resistance which changes when the sensing element adsorbs at least one component of the fluid mixture.

The present invention discloses an improved method for filtration of air within enclosed spaces. Improvement is achieved by the use of a high-temperature carbonaceous char that is catalytically active for the removal of certain undesirable constituents from contaminated air under ambient temperature conditions. This carbonaceous char is used as an air filtration medium and incorporated into an air filtration device by any of a number of technologies. Such devices may be used for removal of contaminants such as NO.sub.x, NO.sub.2, SO.sub.x, SO.sub.2, H.sub.2 S, mercaptans, light aliphatic gases such as butane and propane and other compounds such as benzene, hexane, toluene, xylene, amines and the like from enclosed or confined structures such as buildings or vehicles including automobiles, aircraft, trucks, farm equipment, and the like.

Purification of air in enclosed spaces

An activated carbon adsorbent for removing nosioux gases and vapors from a contaminated air stream, and method of making same. The activated carbon has impregnated therein at least one compound selected from each of three groups of compounds. The three groups of compounds comprise sulfuric acid and sulfuric acid salts; molybdenum compounds, and copper compounds and zinc compounds. The amount of at least one sulfuric acid or salt thereof compound present is up to 10% by sulfate, by weight, the one molybdenum compounds is present in amounts up to 10% by weight, as molybdenum, and the total amount of copper or zinc compounds present is a total amount not greater than 20% by weight as total copper and zinc. The disclose adsorbents are desirably used in universal filters.

Impregnated activated carbon adsorbents for the removal of toxic materials from gas streams are used in a variety of respiration and collective filter applications. The activated carbon impregnated adsorbents in the present invention remain effective in removing toxic gases and/or vapors in military, industrial and other applications, and are free of chromium and its potential health hazards. Generally, these activated carbons are comprised of an activated carbon adsorbent impregnated so as to result in an activated carbon containing 0 to 14% copper and 2 to 16% zinc, optionally supplemented according to the desired characteristics with silver, triethylenediamine, and prepared with or without the use of organic acid. The adsorbent carbons of the present invention have been found to be effective for removing a variety of toxic gases and/or vapors. The formulation of the impregnates, the method of impregnation and the method of drying the activated carbon after impregnation taught by the present invention can be varied to adjust the performance characteristics so as to meet both industrial and military toxic gas performance criteria, to achieve enhanced removal of specific toxic gases and/or vapors, to have an extended shelf like, as well as to obtain other advantages useful in respirator and collective filter applications. The impregnated carbon adsorbents in the present invention possess desirable qualities regarding the toxicity and carcinogenicity of the impregnates to the user, qualities that are not found in a large number of prior art impregnates potentially useful in respirator and collective filter applications.
