A method and a kit for oil removal or injection into the oil pan of a vehicle, marine or aircraft engine. A modified dip stick tube or other access tube extends to the bottom of the oil pan has at least one or more openings at its bottom end to allow oil to enter or exit. The top has an air-tight seal that can be attached to a flexible tube that can be run to a peristaltic pump. The pump can have an exit tube that runs into an oil recovery receptacle. After draining, the oil, the tube can be valved or physically relocated to a fresh oil source. The direction of rotation of the pump can be reversed to fill the oil pan with fresh oil. An electric control can run the pump in both a forward and reverse direction typically from a vehicle battery voltage source.

A system and method for holding tubing for a peristaltic pump that allows for tube stretch or deformation. The present invention compensates for tube stretching and holds the tubing in the elongated position using a one way bearing clutch. Drip retention or a reversal of the pump does not allow the tube to move back into the pump. An encoder can monitor tube elongation and allow metering the tubing during indexing.

System and method for holding tubing for a peristaltic pump

A 'load and go' peristaltic pump tubing arrangement without a special configuration, such as the 'Double-Y' tubing connectors used by the Watson Marlow 505L pump head. One of the critical components in the peristaltic pump system is the pump tubing which now can be monitored so that the health of the peristaltic pump is known. The result is a &#x201c;smart&#x201d; peristaltic pump using a notch or other part in a second spring-clamp or tubing holder. Located on two &#x215b; 316 inch shoulder screws are two roller clutches and two spacers to complete the assembly of the pump. The distance between the two rollers allows the tubing to elongate but not move backward toward the peristaltic rollers.

A liquid storage and dispensing system, and methods for its use in the storage, shipping, and accurate dispensing by manual or automated methods, of, for example, precious biologic samples such as protein, DNA or RNA, with minimal contamination, oxidation, and evaporation, the system having: an essentially cylindrical storage barrel with a flange at its open end and a port and delivery tip at the closed end; a piston with a seal, where the piston closely matches the shape of the closed end of the barrel to minimize dead volume; and a cover to seal the delivery tip during storage such as cryostorage.

Long-term liquid storage and dispensing system

A multiple port, dual diameter piston fluid dispensing pump which includes multiple input and output ports accessed by rotating at least one of the pistons and a dual or multiple diameter piston or set of pistons that cooperate so that they follow each other. The dispensing piston is of smaller diameter than the pushing piston. This diameter difference permits a longer, controllable stroke to dispense micro-liters of fluid accurately.

Novel nanowell microarrays are disclosed in optical contact with polymer waveguides wherein evanescent field associated with lightwaves propagated in the waveguide excite target substances in the nanowells either by a common waveguide or by individual waveguides. Fluid samples are conveyed to the nanowells by means of microfluidics. The presence of the target substances in fluid samples is detected by sensing fluorescent radiation generated by fluorescent tag bound to the target substances. The fluorescent tags generate fluorescent radiation as a result of their excitation by the evanescent field. One or more PMT detectors or a CCD detector are located at the side of the waveguide opposite to the nanowells. Fluorescent radiation is detected due to its coupling with the waveguide or its emission through the waveguide.

Micro-array evanescent wave fluorescence detection device

A cell sorter system that includes a precision pump that causes fluid containing cells to enter an inlet port where the fluid is exposed to source light of one or more wavelengths and where cells scatter light or produce fluorescence by known means, and the scattered light and/or fluorescence is used to detect the presence and position of desired cells. The fluid is passed into a select gate that can be magnetostrictive where it is cause to exit one of a plurality of ports, at least one of these ports receiving the desired cells. A controller controls the precision pump, the detection system, and the select gate so that cells are selected from the fluid. An optional vacuum system can be used to pull fluid or cells out of the selected exit port.

Method and apparatus for cell sorting

A method of making beams, clamps and other structures by curing a polymer containing a magnetostrictive material. A magnetostrictive material like TERFENOL-D&#x2122; is placed in a polymer. This mixture is put onto a slide in a film. The mixture is cured by UV light (or other means) so that it cross-links. A second layer of polymer with no magnetostrictive material can be cured on top of the first layer. This leads to a beam structure which exhibits a bending moment in an applied magnetic field. By aligning the magnetostrictive particles before curing with a magnetic field, a beam or other structure can be produced with aligned particles. A mask can be used to selectively cure regions where the magnetostrictive particles have different alignments on the same layer. It is possible to build up multiple layer structures with layers of magnetostrictive particles aligned in different directions.

Magnetostrictive film actuators using selective orientation

A precision fluid dispensing system containing at least one two-piece pump and a precision closed loop controller drive system to address the small volume precision dispensing requirements of bioscience applications. A multiple diameter pump can be combined with a pump having multiple inlet and outlet ports to allow for precision multiple outlet dispenses in a single pump that finds use with microtiter plate pipetting and other precision dispensing. Inlet ports can be located on the smaller diameter of the cylinder with outlet ports on the larger diameter of the cylinder. A micro-controller with closed loop feedback provides exact linear positioning and motion of the pump piston as well as optional control of a nozzle to provide exact micro-dispensing of fluids.

Precision fluid dispensing system

In a grain elevator, grain mixed with dust is delivered near the top of a grain silo to the receiving orifice of a grain chute. The chute includes an enclosed conduit which extends from the top of the grain silo to its floor and deposits the grain in the silo without freely falling in the interior of the silo. The conduit has a tandem column series of vertically extending doors which are counter-balanced to be normally closed and which are opened by the weight of the grain in the conduit. The fall of the grain within the conduit separates the grain from the dust and the dust is removed by an exhaust fan connected to the conduit, the air flow being through the open bottom doors of the conduit, through the conduit, and out of the silo to a tube connected to a dust separator. In addition, the grain falls within the conduit and flows out of the doors which the grain column opens and which are immediately above the level of the grain already delivered into the silo, the other doors remaining closed.
