A gaming machine is programmed to initiate a spin and determine that a first occurrence of a splitting symbol is displayed at a first symbol position on a first reel of the plurality of reels, determine to activate a splitting symbol feature during the spin based at least in part on an output of a random number generator, replace the splitting symbol on the first reel with an activated splitting symbol, activate the splitting symbol feature as one of a first splitting symbol feature and a second splitting symbol feature, the activating includes inserting an additional symbol into one or more symbol positions such that the first symbol position includes only the first occurrence of the splitting symbol, and such that each of the one or more symbol positions includes one of the one or more second occurrences of the splitting symbol and the additional symbol.

System and method for providing a game with splitting symbols

A gaming machine for providing a game of chance operable upon a wager by a player includes a plurality of reels associated with the game of chance. Each of the plurality of reels includes a plurality of reel positions to generate a symbol thereon. The gaming machine also includes a display comprising a defined plurality of positions to present a symbol thereon for each of the plurality of reels. The gaming machine further includes a processor programmed to generate a spin of the plurality of reels, resulting in a play area. The processor is also programmed to identify a splitting symbol in a first position on the play area, thereby activating the splitting symbol. The processor is further programmed to determine a second position on the play area that includes a splitting symbol as a result of the spin, and to display an additional splitting symbol in the second position.

In various embodiments, the gaming system, gaming device, and gaming method disclosed herein utilizes a single display device to display at least one event indicator which conveys information that is otherwise displayed over a plurality of display devices. In one embodiment, the gaming system employs a multiple layered display device, wherein at least one layer of the display device displays the play of the primary game and at least one layer of the display device displays one or more event indicators. Such event indicators indicate information regarding the play of a secondary game displayed on a secondary display device. Such a configuration alleviates the player from having to frequently look up at the secondary display to determine information regarding the play of the secondary game and then look back down to the primary display to view the play of the primary game.
