Apparatus for electrically reconditioning a rotatable photoreceptor in an electrophotographic (EP) printer includes a charger, an exposure subsystem, a transfer station, and an erase lamp arranged in that order around the photoreceptor in the direction of rotation thereof. A first corona electrode is disposed within 3 cm of the surface of the photoreceptor, but not in contact therewith, between the transfer station and the erase lamp. The transfer station and the erase lamp are at most 1 cm apart. A second corona electrode is disposed within 3 cm of the surface of the photoreceptor, but not in contact therewith, after the erase lamp in the direction of rotation of the photoreceptor. The erase lamp and the second corona electrode are less than 1 cm apart.

Electrical reconditioning for printer photoreceptor

An electrophotographic photoreceptor is prepared for charging. Corona electrodes before and after the erase lamp apply respective biases to provide the correct sign of charge for cleaning, and to discharged trapped charges in the photoreceptor. Toner is then cleaned off the photoreceptor. This leaves the photoreceptor electrically and mechanically reconditioned and ready for its next printing cycle.

The present invention relates to photoconductive elements having an electrically conductive support, an electrical barrier layer and, disposed over the conductive layer, a charge generation layer capable of generating positive charge carriers when exposed to actinic radiation. Disclosed are polymers which include tertiary aryl amine moieties that can function as hole transport agents and which also have reactive silane groups thereon capable of being condensed to a silsesquioxane composition, as well as the silsesquioxane compositions prepared therefrom. The silsesquioxanes can be coated onto substrates to form abrasion-resistant layers having hole transport properties useful in devices that require charge transport properties, such as light-emitting diodes and organic electrophotographic elements such as photoreceptors or photoconductors. Also disclosed are electrophotographic elements which comprise an electrically conducting layer, a charge generating layer overlying the electrically conducting layer, and a charge transport layer overlying the electrically conducting layer. The charge transport layer, which can be an overcoat overlying the charge generating layer, comprises the condensed reaction product of the disclosed polymers.

A multi-active electrophotographic charge generation element comprises a conductive support, a charge generation layer (CGL) disposed on the conductive support, and a charge transport layer (CTL) disposed on the charge generation layer. The charge generation layer (CGL) includes a charge-generation material comprising an aggregated or crystalline form of a first dye or pigment and a first polymeric binder. The charge transport layer (CTL) comprises at least one charge-transport agent, a second dye or pigment having absorption in a selected spectral region that at least partially overlaps the absorption of a dissolved non-aggregated or non-crystalline form of the first dye or pigment, and a second polymeric binder. The second dye or pigment in the charge transport layer absorbs radiation in the selected spectral region that is incident on the charge transport layer, thereby shielding the charge generation layer from that radiation and mitigating visible radiation-induced photofatigue.

Disclosed are photoconductive elements including a conductive support, e.g., an electrically conductive film, drum, or belt, on which a negatively chargeable photoconductive layer is disposed. An electrical barrier layer is disposed between the conductive support and the photoconductive layer. The barrier layer provides a high energy barrier to the injection of positive charges, but transports electrons under an applied electric field. In embodiments, the barrier layer can transport charge by electronic mechanisms, and, is not substantially affected by humidity changes. The barrier layer includes a polyamide-co-imide having covalently bonded as repeat units in the polymer chain, aromatic tetracarbonylbisimide groups of the formula:wherein Arand Arrespectively represent tetravalent or trivalent aromatic groups of 6 to about 20 carbon atoms, and X is O, C(CF), S&#x2550;O or SO. The amount of aromatic tetracarbonylbisimide content in the polymer is selected such that the barrier layer can be coated onto the support as a relatively thick layer, which provides for enhanced performance as a photoconductor when used in an electrophotographic process.

An electrophotographic element comprises: an electrically conducting layer, a charge generating layer overlying the electrically conducting layer, and a charge transport layer overlying the electrically conducting layer. The charge transport layer, which can be an overcoat overlying the charge generating layer, comprises the reaction product in an aqueous medium of a mixture comprising a silsesquioxane polymer and a hole transport compound that comprises a tertiary arylamine containing at least one alcoholic or one phenolic hydroxy substituent.

Electrophotographic charge generating elements comprise a solid electrolyte layer having improved image discrimination. The solid electrolyte layer includes a complex of a silsesquioxane and a charge carrier, and further includes nondiffusible acid scavengers in an amount of at least 0.2 weight %. The acid scavengers are nondiffusible tertiary arylamines having a pKa of at least 4.

Electrophotographic charge generating elements comprise a solid electrolyte layer having improved image discrimination and layer adhesion. The solid electrolyte layer includes a complex of a silsesquioxane and a charge carrier, and is adhered to an underlying photoconductor layer using a primer layer that includes specific addition polymers. This primer layer has a resistivity of at least 10.sup.10 ohms/square and contains substantially no free ACTIVE moieties as defined herein. Such groups, when present in the primer layer, appear to reduce image discrimination.
