The present disclosure relates to a method and a device for treating heart failure by normalizing elevated blood pressure in the left and right atria of a heart of a mammal. The present disclosure includes methods for creating and maintaining an opening in the atrial septum. Tools for making an opening and enlarging the opening are also disclosed. Use of the techniques and tools described herein prolongs the patency of an intra-atrial pressure relief opening.

Apparatus and methods to create and maintain an intra-atrial pressure relief opening

Devices, systems, and methods for combinatorial treatment of a condition with an implantable damping device and therapeutic agent (e.g., drug) are disclosed herein. Methods for treating one or more effects of the condition, such as a neurological condition, include providing the implantable damping device and at least one other therapy, such as a therapeutic agent, that treats the condition to the patient. The implantable damping device includes a flexible damping member and an abating substance and can be placed in apposition with a blood vessel. The flexible damping member forms a generally tubular structure having an inner and an outer surface, the inner surface formed of a sidewall having a partially deformable portion. The abating substance is disposed within the partially deformable portion and moves longitudinally and/or radially within the partially deformable portion in response to pulsatile blood flow.

Devices, systems, and methods for reducing stress on a blood vessel are disclosed herein. A damping device () configured in accordance with embodiments of the present technology can include an anchoring member () coupled to a flexible, compliant damping member () including a generally tubular sidewall having an outer surface (), an inner surface () defining a lumen configured to direct blood flow, a first end portion () and a second end portion (), and a damping region () between the first and second end portions (). The inner and outer surfaces () of the damping member () can be spaced apart by a distance that is greater at the damping region () than at either of the first or second end portions (). When blood flows through the damping member () during systole, the damping member () absorbs a portion of the pulsatile energy of the blood, thereby reducing a magnitude of the pulse pressure transmitted to a portion of the blood vessel distal to the damping device ().

The device comprising a body, at least one passage through the body, at least one one way valve in the passage and a mounting means adapted for mounting the body in an opening provided in the patient's atrial septum. In use, the device is oriented such that, when the patient's left atrial pressure exceeds the patient's right atrial pressure by a predetermined amount, the one way valve(s) opens to allow blood flow through the passage(s) from the left atrium to the right atrium to thereby reduce the left atrial pressure.

The invention is able to accomplish this result by having flexible annular flanges that define a gap into which the septum fits. Due to the flexible nature of the annular flanges, the gap is adjustable.

A device for treating a heart condition in a patient. The device has a body adapted and configured to self-expand from a radially collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration. In its expanded configuration, the device has a first section at a first end, a second section at a second end and a central portion extending between the first and second sections, the first and second sections each having diameters that increase with distance from the central portion toward the first and second ends, respectively. The body is configured to be delivered percutaneously to a patient's heart and allowed to self-expand in an opening in a septum of the heart to dispose the first end in the left atrium, the second end in the right atrium and the central portion in the opening to permit blood to flow through the body from the left atrium to the right atrium.

The intracardiac pressure vents presented allow sufficient flow from the left atrium to the right atrium to relieve elevated left atrial pressure and resulting patient symptoms but also limit the amount of flow from the right atrium to the left atrium to minimize the potential for thrombus or other embolic material from entering the arterial circulation.

Intra-atrial implants to directionally shunt blood

Devices and methods for treating heart disease by normalizing elevated blood pressure in the left and right atria of a heart of a mammal are disclosed. Devices may include an adjustable hydraulic diameter shunt portion which can be manually adjusted in vivo. Methods are provided for adjusting the flow rate of the devices in vivo.
