A method of network communications includes determining an access identifier (AID) for an egress signal through a network interface of a network element, an Optical Transport Network (OTN) multiplexing structure identifier (MSI) associated with the egress signal through the network interface, another AID associated with a defined ingress signal through the network interface, another OTN MSI associated with the defined ingress signal through the network interface, and associating the egress signal and the defined ingress signal based on the AIDs and OTN MSIs. The first OTN MSI is not equal to the second OTN MSI.

In accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure, a method for identifying a target signal in an optical transport network frame structure may be provided. The method may include determining an Access Identifier (AID) for the target signal. The method may also include determining at least one attribute for the target signal. The at least one attribute may define at least one of an Optical Transport Network (OTN) multiplexing structure associated with the target signal and one or more attributes associated with one or a higher order or an intermediate higher order optical data unit entity for a supporting entity of a lower order optical data unit associated with the target signal. The method may further include identifying the target signal based on the AID and the at least one attribute.

A method of optimizing bandwidth usage in a link aggregated network includes identifying available bandwidth on a plurality of data links in a link aggregation group, selecting the data link with the least available bandwidth, and determining whether the available bandwidth of the selected data link is less than a guaranteed bandwidth of an incoming data flow. If the available bandwidth of the selected data link is less than the guaranteed bandwidth of the incoming data flow, the method includes selecting the data link with the next least available bandwidth and repeating the previous steps until the available bandwidth of the selected data link is greater than the guaranteed bandwidth of the incoming data flow. The method further includes assigning the data flow to the data link determined to have an available bandwidth greater than the guaranteed bandwidth of the incoming data flow.

An IP Video distribution and protection system provides lower cost by using a reduced number of expensive IP multi-cast router high-speed ports. A multi-cast data source comprises at least one multi-cast router and a multi-cast server. The data source is coupled to a plurality of multi-cast data destinations via a data distribution network comprising a first and a second ring. The data destinations are communicatively linked together in the first ring for data flow in one direction. The second ring network communicatively connects the data source to the last data destination in the first ring for data flow in a different direction though the destinations. Each destination includes switching elements enabling the destinations to provide data in either direction to end users linked to the respective data destinations.

Provision of TDM service over GPON using VT encapsulation

Information flow in the form of individual channels of digital data across a time division multiplex (TDM) bus is controlled when the bandwidth b.sub.c of an individual channel may not be integrally related to the bandwidth b.sub.t of individual time slots of the TDM bus. A channel is assigned to a selected number m of TDM bus time slots, where m=n and the relationship between b.sub.c and b.sub.t is given by the expression (n-1)b.sub.t &lt;b.sub.c .mu.nb.sub.t. Sequential bytes of data from the channel are transmitted during data byte opportunities in the channel's selected time slots. A validity identification signal is generated for each data byte transfer opportunity in the selected time slots, and a predetermined binary state is transmitted substantially simultaneously with each data byte transfer opportunity. A VALID signal is transmitted, independently of the TDM bus, substantially simultaneously with each data byte transfer opportunity filled by the channel. To permit selected bandwidth in the reverse direction to be controlled over a bidirectional TDM bus, a separate bandwidth request signal may also be transmitted, substantially simultaneously with data byte transfer opportunities in the forward direction but also independently of the TDM bus.

Rate control of channels on a time division multiplex bus

The bandwidth of a packet data transmission node is switched asynchronously without interruption of data transmission and with a minimum of circuit complexity. In particular, a packet channel is permitted to 'breathe', gaining bandwidth when additional bandwidth becomes available from other temporarily unused digital channels and losing such additional bandwidth when such unused digital channels revert to other use. To permit such uninterrupted asynchronous operation, a 'pad' or 'throw away' character is defined which is ignored or discarded when it is received by another packet network node. Such a 'pad' or 'throwaway' character is unique only in the sense that it is distinct from and may not be confused with characters or bytes which may occur in normal data transmission sequences.
