Systems and methods for instituting redistribution of wireless clients to improve service, comprising via access point (AP), multiple APs acting in concert, and/or a central entity, in connection with a network, allowing a client to associate; deciding that an associated client should be redistributed based on a connection metric, wherein the decision is based on at least one of, a probability calculation, network metric and a threshold comparison; and via the AP, sending the associated client a trigger, wherein the trigger is at least one of, a redistribution request and a disconnect message.

Methods and apparatus for deploying RFID readers in an RFID environment that contains dense populations of tags are described. The RFID readers are deployed using a process that provides adequate link margins so that communication can be established with RFID tags in all regions of interest within the RFID environment.

Deploying RFID readers in environments having a dense population of RFID tags

During operation, an electronic device may emulate client functionality associated with a virtual client in a wireless network, where emulating the client functionality includes generating a first frame that is compatible with a wireless communication protocol and is associated with fictious wireless communication with the virtual client. Then, the electronic device may provide, to a computer, a second frame that includes at least a portion of the first frame, where the second frame is compatible with a wired communication protocol. Next, the electronic device may receive, from the computer, a response message based at least in part on the first frame, where the response message includes information associated with a service provided by the computer. Moreover, the electronic device may assess the service based at least in part on the information and may selectively perform the remedial action based at least in part on the assessment.

Service validation using emulated virtual clients

A communication technique for providing a mobile gateway in a radio node (such as an eNodeB) in a local wireless network that is associated with a venue is described. During the communication technique, the radio node may provide, via the mobile gateway, cellular-telephone-network services. In particular, the mobile gateway may implement functions including: providing, when an electronic device attaches to the local wireless network, an Internet Protocol (IP) address to the electronic device based on a media access control (MAC) address for the electronic device, which is, in part, provided by a mobile management entity (MME) in a cellular-telephone network; triggering, via a supported interface, paging to the electronic device when the electronic device is in idle in the local wireless network; transmitting uplink data and receiving downlink data via a cellular-telephone communication protocol (such as Long Term Evolution or LTE); and/or electronic-device mobility in the local wireless network.

Redistributing clients based on comparisons to historical connection metrics

A communication technique for establishing communication among an access point, an electronic device, and a radio node in a cellular-telephone network is described. In this communication technique, the electronic device is pre-provisioned by the radio node with an identifier of the cellular-telephone network. Moreover, the access point may advertise support for one or more LWA protocols in beacons. In response to a query from the electronic device, the access point may provide identifiers of the one or more cellular-telephone networks supported by the access point. If one of these identifiers matches the identifier, the electronic device may associate with the access point. Then, the access point may receive LWA traffic from the radio node and may forward the LWA traffic to the electronic device.

Establishing LWA-WLAN communication

A technique for testing wireless-local-area-network (WLAN) infrastructure is described. In particular, a radio-frequency abstraction layer (RFAL) in a physical instance of an electronic device is used to simulate the physical layer communication hardware and radio channels. RFAL allows frames in initial packets that are compatible with a WLAN communication protocol (such as an IEEE 802.11 standard) to be encapsulated in the data-link layer into additional packets that are compatible with a network communication protocol (such as an IEEE 802.3 standard). These additional packets can include information that characterizes transmission of the packet through a simulated radio-frequency environment so that the software stack associated with a physical or virtual instance of an electronic device can be exercised as if the packet had been received over a wireless connection. Then, the additional packets can be communicated via Ethernet (i.e., without radio-frequency communication) among virtual instances of access points, clients and/or WLAN controllers.

WLAN testing using an RF abstraction layer

A technique for establishing connectivity between electronic devices is described. In particular, when an electronic device is first connected to a network, the electronic device may use a predefined location of a registrar device to request location information for a controller for the electronic device. The electronic device may provide a manufacturer certificate to the registrar device to confirm its identity. After receiving from the registrar device the location information and a registrar certificate that confirms its identity, the electronic device may use the location information to request the security information from a controller that allows the electronic device to establish connectivity with another electronic device. The electronic device may receive the security from the controller along with a controller certificate that confirms the identity of the controller. Moreover, the electronic device may establish a connection with the other electronic device based on the security information.

Zero-touch onboarding in a network

Described in an example embodiment is an end-to-end admission control system that allows any rich media application to secure admission control in an environment where there are mixed wireless and wired segments in the network. In particular embodiments, the system includes the integration of Add Traffic Stream (ADDTS) and Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) admission control mechanisms, the mapping of parameters between these two mechanisms, the admission control policies, and failure handling for the end-to-end resource control.

Resource reservation on networks comprising wireless and wired segments

A network access device for facilitating the troubleshooting of network connectivity problems on a directly connected client device is provided. In one embodiment, the network access device can receive, from the client device, a request directed to a preconfigured web address associated with the network access device. In response to the request, the network access device can generate a web page comprising a ticket number for the client device and a link or form element for submitting a support request and can transmit the web page to the client device. The network access device can subsequently receive a submission of the support request from the client device. In response to the submission, the network access device can automatically collect diagnostic information pertaining to the client device. The network access device can then transmit the diagnostic information and the ticket number to one or more remote servers.

Network access device for facilitating the troubleshooting of network connectivity problems

In order to facilitate access to multiple networks, an electronic device may first authorize a portable electronic device to access a radio-access network associated with a network operator. In particular, the electronic device may provide a request with a first identifier for a portable electronic device to an authentication/authorization server for access to the radio-access network. After receiving first authorization information from the authentication/authorization server for the portable electronic device to access the radio-access network, the electronic device may provide a second request with a second identifier of the portable electronic device to a second server for access to a second network associated with the second server and an entity. Based on the subsequent response from the second server, the electronic device may provide access information to a radio node that allows the portable electronic device to access the radio-access network, or radio-access network and the second network.

Concatenated authentication and authorization to multiple networks

In an example embodiment, an apparatus comprising a transceiver configured to send and receive data and logic coupled to the transceiver. The logic is configured to determine from a signal received by the transceiver whether an associated device sending the signal supports a protocol for advertising available services. The logic is configured to send a request for available services from the associated device via the transceiver responsive to determining the associated device supports the protocol. The logic is configured to receive a response to the request via the transceiver, the response comprising at least one service advertisement and a signature. The logic is configured to validate the response by confirming the signature.
