Child's safety seat

Child safety seats are used for the safe transport of children in vehicles. The child safety seats known from prior art often offer only insufficient protection in the case of a side impact. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a child safety seat that improves the protective effect of the child safety seat in the case of a side impact. This object is solved by a child safety seat with side impact protection according to the invention. Such a child safety seat comprises at least one element absorbing and/or transmitting energy which is arranged and designed to be transferred from a rest position to a functioning position to absorb a laterally impacting energy in the functioning position.

A child restraint apparatus relates to holding a child within a vehicle interior. The apparatus has a body with an internal area for receiving a child. An energy absorbing member extends in use over at least part of an external surface of the body. This energy absorbing member faces away from the internal area.

A deformable, polypropylene-moulding lining (), is provided in a head rest. It has a crosspiece (), clipped () to the head support () and right and left deformable wings (). These are longer than the support wings () of the head part (), extending past distal edges () of the support wings. The deformable wings are spaced inwards from the support wings, with voids () defined between them. The deformable wings are divided into two in their forwards extent by a living hinge () into a front portion () and a rear portion (). The living hinge is positioned just inside the distal edges of the shell wings. The injection moulded lining has its own foam materiel lining (), the whole being covered with upholstery (). The result of the arrangement is that if an occupant's head H impacts the lining in side impact of the vehicle equipped with the seat, the relevant lining wing will be pressed against the shell wing. This involves energy absorbing (maximum acceleration limiting) deformation of not only the foam material, but also of the lining wing and to a less extent of the shell wing. With the lining wing deformation (), the front portion () of the lining wing pivots forwards about the shell edge (), from a position swept back with respect to the shell wing to a position generally in line with the compressed inner portion of the lining.

A child safety seat for use in a vehicle has a seat body and a harness including a pair of shoulder straps which extend through respective slots in the seat back to a mechanism for adjusting the length of the shoulder straps. The height at which the shoulder straps project from the seat back can be varied by threading them through different slots. A pad is slidably mounted on each shoulder strap and has a cover formed of high friction material on the side thereof facing the child occupant's body. A tether strap has one end attached to each pad and projects through the same slot in the seat back as the corresponding shoulder strap for limiting movement of the corresponding chest pad along the shoulder strap to a predetermined limit distance away from the seat back. Such limit distance increases as the height at which the shoulder straps project from the seat back is increased.
