An electrical appliance comprises a power supply cable (70) having a first conductor (200) surrounded by a second conductor (210) for supplying electrical power to the appliance from a domestic electricity mains supply, and a connector (490) connected to cable for detachably connecting the conductors of the cable to first and second voltage signals of the electricity mains supply. In operation, the second conductor (210) is connected to the lower of the voltage signals. The second conductor (210) thus acts as a shield in opposition to electric fields radiating from the cable. The shield improves in efficiency as the lower mains voltage signal approaches Ground potential.

Electrical appliance with reduced electric field emissions

This specification concerns cathode ray tube display apparatus comprises a cathode ray tube display screen (10). A beam generator (60,30) is provided for generating at least one electron beam in the cathode ray tube display screen (10) to produce a video image. Also provided is a line timebase circuit (40) for generating a line deflection signal to sequentially address the or each electron beam to successive pixels on the screen (10) in a line of a raster, and a frame timebase circuit (50) for generating an alternating frame deflection signal for sequentially addressing the or each electron beam to successive lines of the raster. The apparatus further comprises a standby circuit (110) connected to the line and frame timebase circuits (40,50). The standby circuit (40,50) switches the deflection signals generated by the timebase circuits (40,50) between first predetermined amplitudes and second predetermined amplitudes, less than the first predetermined amplitudes, in response to a control input (100) switching between first and second predetermined states. Because the amplitudes of the deflection signals are reduced when the display is configured to operate in standby mode, both the power dissipated by, and the stray electric and magnetic fields radiating from the display can be significantly reduced during periods of temporary non-use.

A display system is described, comprising a display device (88) for generating a visual output in response to a plurality of data signals defining the data to be displayed, a display adapter circuit (92) for generating the data signals in a form specified by control data identifying the display device (88), an output port (94) for connecting the data signals from the display adapter circuit to the display device (88) and for connecting the control data from the display device (88) to the display adapter circuit (92), characterized in that the display system further comprises a non-volatile memory (9) located in the display device (88) for storing the control data in the form of a plurality of control codes, and communication logic (95) for communicating a control code between the memory and the output port (94) in response to a command signal (21) generated by the display adapter circuit (92). The communication logic comprises a serial data link (3) for communicating the control code between the display device and the output port, device logic (97) located in the display device for communicating the control code between the memory and the serial data link, and adapter logic (96) located in the display adapter circuit for communicating the control code between the serial data link and the display adapter circuit.
