A method and apparatus is provided for operating a piston driven, internal combustion engine () including a the piston () translating in a cylinder (). The engine () has an intake stroke, followed by a partial exhaust stroke, followed by a compression stroke, followed by a power stroke and then an exhaust stroke, all of which are sequentially repeated. The compression stroke has a stroke length that is less than the stroke length of the power stroke.

A method, apparatus and computer program product for storing data in a disk storage system is presented. A high-performance dictionary data structure is defined. The dictionary data structure is stored on a disk storage system. Key-value pairs can be inserted and deleted into the dictionary data structure. Updates run faster than one insertion per disk-head movement. The structure can also be stored on any system with two or more levels of memory. The dictionary is high performance and supports with full transactional semantics, concurrent access from multiple transactions, and logging and recovery. Keys can be looked up with only a logarithmic number of transfers, even for keys that have been recently inserted or deleted. Queries can be performed on ranges of key-value pairs, including recently inserted or deleted pairs, at a constant fraction of the bandwidth of the disk.

The routing network transfers messages among the message generating elements in accordance with address information identifying a destination message generating element. Each message generating node includes a message data generator and a network interface. The message data generator generates message data items each including an address data portion comprising a destination identifier. The network interface includes a message generator and an address translation table, the table including a plurality of entries identifying, for at least one destination identifier, a translated destination identifier. The message generator, in response to the receipt of a message data item from the message data generator, generates a message for transmission to the routing network. In generating the message, the message generator performs an address translation operation in connection with the address data and the contents of the address translation table to generate updated address data which it uses data in connection with generating address information for the message.

A computer including a processor array and a routing network. Processors in the processor array generate messages for transfer to over the routing network, each message including a path identifier portion identifying a path from a source, message processor to a destination processor. The routing network comprises a plurality of interconnected router nodes, at least some of said router nodes being connected to the processors to receive messages therefrom and transmit messages thereto. Each router node operates in a plurality of modes. In a first mode, the router nodes couple received messages to a router node connected thereto in accordance with the path identifier portion to thereby transfer each respective message along the path identified in its path identifier portion. In a second mode, the router node couple received messages to predetermined ones of the router nodes or processors connected thereto, the predetermined ones of said router nodes or processors being selected to facilitate transfer of a message to a nearby processor to facilitate the rapid emptying of the routing network of messages. A control element controls the router nodes to enable them to operate in the first mode or second mode generally contemporaneously.

A computer comprising a plurality of processing elements and an input/output processor interconnected by a routing network. The routing network transfers messages between the processing elements and the input/output processor. The processing elements perform processing operations in connection with data received from the input/output processor in messages transferred over the routing network and transferring processed data to the input/output processor in messages over the routing network, the processing elements being connected as a first selected series of leaf nodes. The input/output processor includes a plurality of input/output buffers connected as a second selected series of leaf nodes of the routing network for generating messages for transfer over the routing network to a series of processing elements forming at least a selected subset of the processing elements during an input/output operation.

A digital computer includes a plurality of processing elements, a command processor, a diagnostic processor and a communications network. The processing elements each performs data processing and data communications operations in connection with commands. The data router is connected to the processing elements for facilitating the transfer of data among them during a data communications operation. The diagnostic network connected to the processing elements, the command processor and the diagnostic processor for transferring diagnostic requests from the diagnostic processor to the processing elements and the command processor and for transferring diagnostic results from the processing elements and the command processor to the diagnostic processor.

Parallel computer system

A new driver circuit and receiver circuit for transmitting and receiving a differential signal pair. The driver circuit includes true and complement signal generating elements that generate a differential signal pair in tandem. Each of the true and complement signal generating elements includes a high-gain element and at least one low-gain element. The delay circuit is responsive to the true and complement data signal for iteratively controlling the high-gain element and low-gain element of each signal generating element to effect the generation of the differential signal pair, the delay circuit controlling the high-gain element with a delay relative to the low-gain element to thereby reduce ringing in the differential signal pair. The receiver circuit receives a differential receive signal pair, comprising true and complement receive signals having selected conditions over a pair of input lines and generates a true and complement data signal. The receiver circuit, during normal receiving operations, generates true and complement signals in response to the differential receive signal pair. During a test mode, the receiver circuit, in separate steps, compares the voltage levels of the true and complement receive signals to threshold voltages and generates an error signal if the selected true or complement receive signal does not have the proper relationship to the voltage level of the threshold voltage.
