A method for scanning a weld buildup formed on a circumferential portion of a disc for a steam turbine. The method includes providing an ultrasound probe for generating at least one ultrasound beam sweep. The circumferential portion is scanned with a first beam sweep oriented in a first beam orientation to detect a first flaw type in the weld buildup. The circumferential portion is also scanned with a second beam sweep oriented in a second beam orientation to detect a second flaw type in the weld buildup. Further, the circumferential portion is scanned with a third beam sweep oriented in a third beam orientation to detect a third flaw type in the weld buildup. The method also includes rotating the disc about a disc axis during scanning of the circumferential portion and moving the first, second and third beam sweeps in a direction parallel to the disc axis during scanning.

Method for ultrasound scanning of a weld buildup

Disclosed are new boronizing compositions consisting of boron fluoride and boron oxide, borax, or an iron boride. The compositions reduce the heating temperature and time. Further disclosed are methods of boronizing a metal substrate including these compositions, or any combination thereof.

Boronizing composition and method for surface treatment of steels

A magnetic particle inspection system for inspecting a plurality of articles. The system includes a first magnetizing coil for generating a first magnetic field oriented in a first direction. The system also includes a second magnetizing coil for generating a second magnetic field oriented in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction, wherein the first and second magnetizing coils are located in a common plane. In addition, the system may include a mat having a plurality of drainage holes, wherein the first and second magnetizing coils are located in the mat and the first and second magnetizing coils are sized to inspect a plurality of articles. Further, the system includes a power supply for supplying power for energizing the first and second magnetizing coils and a switching unit for switching current flow between the first and second magnetizing coils.

Multidirectional magnetic particle inspection system

A scanning probe for an industrial nondestructive evaluation (NDE) ultrasound or eddy current scanning system. The scanning probe gathers reflected waveform data indicative of internal characteristics of the test object. The scanning probe also includes a self-contained multi-axis position encoder that correlates both multi-dimensional probe underside translation and rotation motion across the test sample surface with the multi-dimensional spatial location on the test object surface. The position encoder compensates for probe rotation that would otherwise negatively impact probe position determination accuracy. A data acquisition system combines sets of positional and waveform data for processing by an NDE analyzer.

Non destructive evaluation scanning probe with self-contained multi-axis position encoder

A non-destructive inspection system that has particular application for inspecting a bore in a valve for defects. The system includes an inspection yoke having a ferromagnetic core, where a first coil is wound around the core in one direction and a second coil is wound around the core in an orthogonal direction so that orthogonal electromagnetic fields can be generated within the bore. A controller provides a current flow through the coils to generate the electromagnetic fields to detect defects in the bore.

A method of adding material to a nickel-based superalloy component, such as a gas turbine rotor disk, without damaging the underlying material and without creating an unacceptable level of cracking. The method is advantageously applied in the repair of Alloy 706 turbine rotors having experienced operating failures in the steeple region of the disk. Once the damaged material is removed, replacement nickel-based superalloy material is added using a welding process that protects both the underlying material and the replacement material. The replacement material may be added by welding, with the preheat temperature maintained no lower than 100&#xb0; C. below the aging temperature of the deposited alloy and with the interpass temperature maintained below the solution annealing temperature of the alloy. Alternatively, the replacement material may be preformed and welded to the original material using a friction welding process. In one embodiment, a replacement steeple of directionally solidified or single crystal material is installed onto a disk hub using a linear friction welding technique.

Repair of nickel-based alloy turbine disk

A composite turbine disc includes a high nickel rim section and a steel bore section. The rim section is formed from a high nickel alloy which provides a higher melting point as compared to the material used for the bore section. A plating or forged welding enhanced agent layer is disposed between the bore section and rim section. Composite disc can be formed by forging the rim and bore material together, or by welding the rim and bore material together.
