A removable manifold for a medical/surgical waste collection system. The manifold is dimensioned to be mounted to a receiver integral with the system. The manifold includes at least one tube through which waste is drawn into a manifold cage. The tube extends through an inlet port into a void space internal to the manifold cage at an angle. The tube exits the manifold cage and is centered along an axis that is off center to the longitudinal axis of the manifold cage where it engages a complementary valve internal to the receiver. The valve regulates flow between the receiver and the down line components of the waste collection system. The valve is normally closed. When the manifold is fitted to the receiver the tube engages the valve and rotation of the manifold moves the valve to the open position allowing fluid flow from the manifold and receiver to the downstream components of the system.

The sensor system may include passive RFID sensors or tags, RFID readers, antenna, a tuning module, a processing module, a memory module and a wireless communication module. The absorbent structure may further include two or more sensors, with a first sensor placed in a first area most likely to first be exposed to liquid and a second sensor spaced apart from the first sensor in an area likely to be exposed to liquid only after the absorbent structure has become more saturated.

A device for cleaning medical implements is disclosed, in particular a device for cleaning vascular or other fluid access sites. The device includes a cap having an opening to receive an access site. The cap may be used in the following manner: A healthcare worker may, with gloved hands, open the cap packaging and place the cap over the port of a medical implement to be cleaned. The healthcare worker may wipe the site by either applying a turning motion or by simply pushing the cap onto the port. The cap could then remain secured in place by threads other mechanisms. A cap in place on a medical implement may be a positive indication that a desired site of the medical implement is clean. The cap may include a disinfecting substance.

Systems, methods and apparatus are disclosed for improving medical procedures and medical procedure management, and, more particularly, for tracking medical instruments throughout a procedure and assisting medical personnel throughout the procedure or at least at the conclusion of the procedure. In one form, an apparatus for tracking medical instruments throughout a procedure is disclosed having a single camera for tracking movement and/or detecting position of a plurality of medical instruments during a medical procedure as at least one of the plurality of medical instruments is moved between multiple zones at least including a first prep zone and a second procedure zone. The apparatus having a controller connected to and collecting images from the camera, and a display in electrical communication with the controller and/or the camera for displaying medical instrument data pertaining to the movement and/or position of the plurality of medical instruments.

Systems, apparatus and methods for continuously tracking medical items throughout a procedure

A female external urinary device useful in managing urine output of a female, such as for surgical use, includes a core having a suction channel and an interior reservoir fluidically communicating with the suction channel, an absorbent layer, and a fabric cover. Desirably, the urinary device includes a moderately absorbent soaker layer disposed inwardly with respect to the core. A retractable needle catheter insertion device is provided with a cannula and a needle positioned within the cannula to assist with insertion of the cannula. After insertion of the cannula into a patient, the needle can retract into a protective sleeve that contains the needle in order to reduce the chance that a medical practitioner will be inadvertently stuck by a used needle. The needle is carried by a needle support that is slidably disposed within the sleeve. A spring biases the needle support and needle toward a retracted position, and the device also includes an activation hub that works in conjunction with the needle support to control retraction of the needle. The retraction may be activated manually by the medical practitioner or may be activated automatically. A modular system and method of manufacturing is also provided in which catheters having either manually or automatic retraction can be manufactured using common parts.
