Provided are induction heating cells including pressure bladders used for supporting dies and methods of using these induction heating cells. A pressure bladder may be disposed between a die and a bolster of the cell. Even when the bolster is deformed during operation of the cell, the pressure bladder continues to provide uniform support to the die thereby preserving integrity of the die and prevents its cracking or braking. As such, the cell may be operated at a higher processing pressure inside the cavity formed by the die without further strengthening the bolster. The bolster is allowed to deform without compromising the integrity of the die. The deformation of the bolster is compensated by the shape change of the pressure bladder. The number and/or position of the bladders in the cell may depend on the shape of processed parts.

The first panel region may comprise an incline face sheet and a bottom face sheet, wherein the incline face sheet may be at an acute angle to the bottom face sheet. The honeycomb panel structure may be compressed in the first panel region, a first pin of the first plurality of pins may be perpendicular to the incline face sheet, and a second pin of the first plurality of pins may be perpendicular to the bottom face sheet.

A method for determining an actual shear angle between an interior wall and a facesheet of a cellular panel using an imaging system is disclosed. The imaging system may include a radiation source and a detector diametrically opposed to the radiation source. The method may include positioning the cellular panel at a tilt angle relative to a line extending between the radiation source and the detector, transmitting radiation from the radiation source to the detector through the cellular panel at the tilt angle to obtain an image, measuring a projected shear angle in the obtained image, and determining the actual shear angle between the interior wall and the facesheet using the tilt angle and the projected shear angle.

The apparatus includes first and second co-operable dies structured to define a die cavity therebetween for at least partially receiving the preform, at least one heater in thermal communication with the die cavity for heating the preform to a forming temperature, and at least one injector in fluid communication with the die cavity. The injector is structured for injecting pressurized gas into the die cavity to urge the preform against one of the dies to form the preform into the structural assembly. Further, at least one of the injectors is structured for injecting a quenchant into the die cavity to thereby heat treat the structural assembly while distortion of the structural assembly is being at least partially restrained by at least one of the dies.

An apparatus for comprises a base, a wall, and an opening in the wall. The base has a first end, a second end, and a channel system. The channel system is located closer to the first end than the second end of the base. The wall extends from a side of the base to partially enclose the channel system. The opening in the wall is located closer to the second end than the first end. The shape of the wall is capable of retaining a gas introduced through the channel system in a welding location and causing the gas to move away from the channel system and through the opening in the wall.

A structural assembly and an associated system and method for manufacture are provided. The structural assembly includes an elongate member and a first connector member that is connected to an end of the elongate member by a braze joint. A second connector member can be connected to an end of the elongate member opposite the first connector by another braze joint. The elongate member is formed of a metal matrix composite material that includes a plurality of fibers of a reinforcement material disposed in a metal matrix. Each connector member is formed of a material that is dissimilar to the material of the elongate member. The braze joints can be formed by selectively heating the braze material, e.g., with an inductive coil that extends circumferentially around only a portion of the structural assembly.

Brazed structural assembly and associated system and method for manufacture

An apparatus and method for consolidating a composite workpiece are provided. The apparatus includes an electromagnetic field generator for inducing a current and thereby heating a susceptor in thermal communication with the workpiece. The workpiece is supported by one or more support tools, each of which transmits the electromagnetic field so that the support tools are not substantially heated by the electromagnetic field. Thus, the time and energy required for heating the workpiece are reduced relative to conventional consolidation techniques.
