An integrated reconfigurable planar lightwave add-drop (RPLAD) multiplexer for use in a WDM optical communication system is arranged such that each drop port can receive any wavelength channel and each add port can transmit on any wavelength channel. Drop port reconfigurability is achieved by integrating a cross-connect functionality into the RPLAD, illustratively using optical 1&#xd7;2 switches to perform 'space' switching. The switches are controlled from a remotely located node controller. Add port reconfigurability is achieved by having tunable lasers and a wavelength independent optical power combiner, which may be a star coupler that is integrated with the other above-mentioned elements. The RPLAD has a modular architecture, so that when RPLAD's are connected by dual unidirectional transmission rings for the purpose of redundancy and failure protection, an RPLAD that fails can be removed and the remaining module can be reconfigured so as to re-route incoming traffic backwards around the still operating optical communication ring.

Integrated reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer

A proposed integrateable optical interleaver includes an input Y-branch coupler and at least two multi-section optical couplers. The multi-section optical couplers of the interleaver include at least three substantially similar optical couplers, adjacent ones of the optical couplers interconnected via at least one set of waveguides. The interleaver of the present invention comprises a highly compact and fabrication-robust form that is capable of being integrated onto a single planar lightwave circuit.

Integrateable optical interleaver and de-interleaver

An apparatus and method are provided for transmitting an optical duobinary signal using a low bandwidth modulator having a bandwidth of less than about 60% of the transmission bit rate of the transmitter. The modulator is adapted to provide low pass filtering for low pass filtered duobinary transmission in an optical fiber transmission system having residual dispersion.

Apparatus and method for duobinary transmission

An optical duobinary transmission system and method are provided for transmitting optical duobinary signals across an optical transmission link having residual dispersion. The system includes a transmitter having a low bandwidth modulator, adapted to provide filtering for low pass filtered duobinary transmission. The transmission link is designed such that the residual dispersion of the transmission link substantially compensates for signal distortion from the transmitter.

Duobinary transmission system and method

A dual-output Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM2) and configurations of optical transmitters based on the MZM2 which obviate the optical splitter that is typically used to provide keep-alive functionality in redundantly-connected, protected optical networks, SONET add-drop multiplexers, and optical IP routers. The configurations provide equivalent keep-alive utility at a reduced system cost relative to the prior art. The configurations also support enhanced Operations, Administration, Maintenance, and Provisioning (OAM&P) functionality at little to no additional cost relative to the prior art. Instead of being a direct copy of the service signal, the keep-alive of this configuration is an inverted version of the service signal. This inverted version of the service signal is supported at a client by utilization of means for detecting and righting the inverted signal. The inverted state of the signal on the protection path can be used as an inband indicator to notify the client in the event of a failure on the service path. This inband indicator requires little or no additional circuitry to accommodate. Another aspect of this invention allows the provisionable substitution of the inverted signal with a preemptive signal to support low-priority traffic when there is no fault on the service path S.

Provisionable keep-alive signal for physical-layer protection of an optical network

Method and apparatus for fault localization in an optical network using time trend correlation of end node performance parameters and intermediate node performance parameters, such as QoS and quasi-Q factors, respectively. The method and apparatus are bit-rate and protocol independent, enabling testing for each channel of a diverse dense wavelength division multiplexed traffic system using a single set of hardware.

Method and apparatus for locating faults in an optical network

A method and apparatus for optical performance monitoring that provides for multi-rate and multi-protocol monitoring includes, identifying a protocol associated with each of a plurality of communication signals using respective data rates extracted therefrom, determining, for each of the plurality of communication signals, a respective bit-error rate (BER), and generating an alarm indicative of BER excursions beyond a protocol appropriate BER threshold level.

Method and apparatus for multi-protocol and multi-rate optical channel performance monitoring

A facility is provided to allow a supervisory message to quickly propagate through a transmission network without delay. Specifically, a supervisory message is quickly routed from one node to a next node by (a) splitting the control channel signal carrying the supervisory message at a receiving node, (b) sending one of the split control channel signals to an output via switchable apparatus for immediate transmission the next node and (c) sending the other split signal to a controller for analysis. If the controller invokes a predetermined procedure as a result of the content of the message, e.g., invokes protection switching, then the controller forms a supervisory message identifying the invoked procedure, operates the switchable apparatus so that the message identifying the invoked procedure may be routed to the output in place of the split channel signal message.

Control channel processor and switching mechanism

An optical transmission system formed from a plurality of nodes interconnected in a ring configuration via at least two transmission media provides protection capacity for each optical channel. If a channel signal does not meet predetermined criteria, then a loss of signal indication is declared for the channel and one of a plurality of protection switching states is invoked to re-route service traffic carried by the impaired channel to its destination via corresponding protection capacity. The switching states include particular transmission states and at least &ldquo;keep-alive&rdquo; and &ldquo;protection access&rdquo; states.

Shared optical protection ring architecture

Vulnerability of an optical network to channel impairments or the like, is addressed by utilizing real-time monitoring and control of prescribed optical channel impairments. The impairments are compensated for by employing an optimization process in the optical network such that the optical signals from the source or sources of the impairments are controllably adjusted at any particular node in the network. The optical signals are attenuated more or less at the source node of the associated optical channel in order to optimize performance of the corresponding optical channel in the network. A variable optical attenuator (VOA) is used at the &lgr; laser source of optical channel having the impairment to obtain the attenuation. The optical signal impairment is measured at a receiving node and the source node of the associated optical channel is determined. Then, a control message is transmitted to the identified source node indicating that a VOA associated with the corresponding optical channel &lgr; laser source is to be adjusted to insert more or less attenuation as the case may be. This process is iterated until the corresponding optical channel yields optimum performance for the impairment being measured. A VOA in a remote node associated with the &lgr; laser source of the associated optical channel is first adjusted. Then, a VOA in the local node associated with the optical channel being monitored is adjusted to further optimize the prescribed metric of the optical channel being monitored. This adjustment is iterated until the performance of the associated channel is optimized.
