Generally, an atmospheric water harvesting system useful in harvesting water from surrounding air. Specifically, a water harvester including a secondary heat exchanger operable in a first mode of the water harvester to absorb heat from the ambient environment to reduce the sensible heat penalty associated with increasing temperature to initiate desorption of water from a water capture material and in particular embodiments operable in a second mode of the water harvester to transfer heat from the desorbed water to the ambient environment.

Generally, an air dehumidification system useful in dehumidifying gases to produce gases having low dew points. Specifically, an air dehumidifier and methods of making and using an air dehumidifier including a plurality of modules each containing a water capture material which absorbs water from a supply airflow in an adsorption mode and releases water vapor in a desorption mode, wherein one or more of the plurality of modules concurrently operate in the adsorption mode to reduce the dew point of the supply airflow as one or more of the plurality of modules operate in the desorption mode to regenerate the water capture material.

Provided herein are water harvesting systems, as well as methods using such systems, for capturing water from surrounding air. The systems and methods use water capture materials to adsorb water from the air. For example, the water capture materials may be metal-organic-frameworks. The systems and methods desorb this water in the form of water vapor, and the water vapor can be condensed into liquid water and collected to dehumidify air conditioned by the water harvesting system. The collected liquid water can be sprayed to humidify air conditioned by the water harvesting system.

Specifically, a water harvester configured to reduce the sensible heat penalty associated with heating of a volume of air in the desorption mode and cooling of the volume of air in the condensation mode of the atmospheric water harvesting system, and methods of making the water harvester and methods of using the water harvester to collect water with a reduced sensible heat penalty contribution to total energy cost per liter of collected water.

Provided herein are atmospheric water harvesting systems that are tailored with an optimal adsorption threshold, based on energy cost and water availability considerations. The systems include a plurality of adsorbent modules, each containing metal organic frameworks of various adsorption thresholds. Such a design enables real time adjustment to achieve optimal harvesting conditions in changing atmospheric conditions, whether for daily or seasonal humidity variations.

Generally, a water harvester useful in harvesting water from supply air. Specifically, a water harvester configured to remove the heat gained during adsorption of water by the water capture material contained in the water capture modules of the water harvester. Removal of the enthalpy associated with the adsorption of water by the water capture material can lower the equilibrium temperature of the water capture material and increase the driving potential of adsorption by the water capture material and correspondingly increase the difference in absolute humidity between the supply air passing into a water capture module and the discharge air passing out of a water capture module.

Apparatus and methods relating to DNA sequencing are provided. In one embodiment, a DNA sequencing device includes a nanochannel having a width that is approximately 0.3 nm to approximately 20 nm. A pair of electrodes having portions exposed to the nanochannel may form a tunneling current electrode (TCE) with an electrode gap of approximately 0.1 nm to approximately 2 nm, and more particularly about 0.3 nm to about 1 nm. In one embodiment, at least one of the pair of electrodes is formed as a suspended electrode. An actuator may be associated with the suspended electrode to displace it relative to the other electrode. In various embodiments, the nanochannel and/or the electrodes may be formed using thermal reflow processes to reduce the size of such features.

Method to fabricate a nanochannel for DNA sequencing based on narrow trench patterning process

A DNA sequencing device, and related methods, include a nanopore or nanochannel structure, and a nanoelectrode. The nanoelectrode includes electrode members having free ends exposed within the nanopore or nanochannel structure, an electrode gap defined between of the free ends, and plated portions formed on the free ends to provide a reduced sized for the electrode gap.

Fabrication of a nanochannel for DNA sequencing using electrical plating to achieve electrode gap

A DNA sequencing device and methods of making. The device includes a pair of electrodes having a spacing of no greater than about 2 nm, the electrodes being exposed within a nanopore to measure a DNA strand passing through the nanopore. The device can be made by depositing a conductive layer over a sacrificial channel and then removing the sacrificial channel to form the electrode gap.
