A self-contained round of ammunition has a cartridge casing including a tubular body defining a cylindrical rifled bore and a base threadably attached to the casing body and forming a closure for a breech end of the rifled bore. A sabot which carries a ring airfoil projectile is constrained for limited axial movement within and relative to the bore from a loaded position adjacent the base to a fired position wherein an annular arresting lip integrally formed at the muzzle end of the cartridge body engages an annular abutment surface on the sabot. The lip defines a cylindrical muzzle opening having a diameter smaller than the diameter of the bore and larger than the major diameter of the projectile which may pass freely there through. The sabot in its loaded position cooperates with the base to form a pressure chamber therebetween for receiving gasses of explosion generated by a powder charge contained within the base and in communication with a primer mounted in the base. A bore engaging ring on the sabot has lands and grooves complementing associated portions of lands and grooves defining the rifling within the bore. When the round is fired the moving sabot is abruptly halted within the bore by the arresting lip at the muzzle end causing the spinning ring airfoil projectile to separate from the sabot and leave the cartridge along a flight path. A launcher for firing the self contained round includes a detent member which cooperates with a detent notch in the cartridge base to restrain the cartridge against angular movement about its axis and relative to the launcher when it is fired.

A releasable bolt lock for two position safety firearms which can be actuated separate from the safety lever and which allows the unloading of the rifle with the safety in the 'safe' or 'on' position.

A firearm having a disconnector movable in two planes to disconnect the gun if the bolt moves rearward, disconnects the gun if the magazine box is removed and is the connecting member between the trigger and the sears. The firearm has a double sear both of which must be released from the firing pin carrier before the firing pin carrier can move into a firing mode. The firing pin carrier has an indicator visible to the operator to indicate whether or not the gun is in a firing mode. The magazine latch has an integral ejector and the barrel has projections between the magazine box is received to align the magazine box to the chamber mouth. Additionally, there is a firing pin retractor plunger in the bolt which separates the firing pin carrier from the bolt immediately after firing to enhance ejection of spent rounds.

A lever action rifle having a breech bolt, an exposed hammer moveable between cocked and striking positions, an operating lever supported for movement between inactive and cocking and loading position for opening and closing the breech bolt and moving the hammer to cocked position, and a trigger moveable from a ready position to a firing position to release the hammer from cocked position to move to striking position includes a hammer blocking mechanism which allows the hammer to attain its striking position only in response to proper operation of the trigger. A trigger latching mechanism secures the trigger in its ready position when the operating lever is moved from its inactive position and also functions to releasably retain the operating lever in its inactive position.

A pistol-type signal launcher having a spring-actuated hammer carrying the firing pin, a pivotally mounted barrel releasably retained in firing position by a plunger which is biased toward the barrel support cam by a spring which also biases the trigger toward cocked position, moving the sear into engagement with the hammer base; the hammer spring acts on the hammer through a rebound cam.
