In an embodiment, a processing device receives an instruction to schedule an event associated with a remote target device, generates a schedule for the remote target device, and transmits the schedule to the remote target device. The processing device receives usage information from the remote target device and additional usage information from other remote devices. The processing device applies a machine learning algorithm to the usage information and the additional usage information to determine an update to the schedule. The processing device updates the schedule and sends the update to the remote target device.

Compact schedules for resource-constrained devices

A processing device executing a scheduler receives, by a device, a schedule from a remote server computing device, the schedule having a compact format that is understood by the device. The device stores the schedule and the processing device parses the schedule to identify a scheduled event. The processing device executes the scheduled event at a specified time in accordance with the schedule even in the absence of a network connection between the device and the remote server computing device.

A method and apparatus for communicating between electrical appliances (e.g. smoke detectors, thermostats, refrigerators, TV program recorders, lawn/garden sprinkler systems, irrigation control systems, etc.) and cloud-based applications (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, email, SMS, etc.) includes a server that translates communications between the communication protocols used by the appliances and applications. The electrical appliances include a minimum complexity necessary to perform their primary functions and to communicate with the server. Additional complexity necessary for the electrical appliances to communicate with the cloud-based applications is enabled by the server remote from the electrical appliances.

Communicating through a server between appliances and applications

The preferred embodiments described herein provide a method for field-programming a solid-state memory device with a digital media file. In one preferred embodiment, a solid-state memory device is provided that comprises a memory array comprising a plurality of field-programmable memory cells. A digital media file is selected for storage in the memory device, and a digital media source field-programs the memory cells of the memory device with the selected digital media file. After the digital media file is stored in the memory device, the stored digital media file can be played using a digital playback device. In some embodiments, the memory array is a three-dimensional memory array, and the memory cells are write-once memory cells. Other preferred embodiments are provided, and each of the preferred embodiments described herein can be used alone or in combination with one another.

Method for field-programming a solid-state memory device with a digital media file

The preferred embodiments described herein provide a write-many memory device and method for limiting a number of writes to the write-many memory device. In one preferred embodiment, a write-many memory device is provided comprising a plurality of blocks of memory, each block being limited to N number of writes. Data can be stored in a block of memory only if there has been fewer than N number of writes to the block. In another preferred embodiment, a write-many memory device is provided comprising a plurality of blocks of memory, wherein each block comprises a first sideband field storing data indicating whether the block is free and a second sideband field storing data indicating how many times the block has been written into. The first and second sideband fields are used in a method for limiting a number of writes to the write-many memory device. Other preferred embodiments are provided, and each of the preferred embodiments can be used alone or in combination with one another.

Support circuitry for a three-dimensional memory array is formed in a substrate at least partially under the three-dimensional memory array and defines open area in the substrate under the three-dimensional memory array. In one preferred embodiment, one or more memory arrays are formed at least partially in the open area under the three-dimensional memory array, while in another preferred embodiment, logic circuitry implementing one or more functions is formed at least partially in the open area under the three-dimensional memory array. In yet another preferred embodiment, both one or more memory arrays and logic circuitry are formed at least partially in the open area under the three-dimensional memory array. Other preferred embodiments are provided, and each of the preferred embodiments can be used alone or in combination with one another.

Integrated systems using vertically-stacked three-dimensional memory cells

The preferred embodiments described herein provide a three-dimensional memory cache system. In one preferred embodiment, a modular memory device removably connectable to a host device is provided. The modular memory device comprises a substrate, a cache memory array, a three-dimensional primary memory array, and a modular housing. The cache memory array and the three-dimensional primary memory array can be on the same or separate substrates in the modular housing. In another preferred embodiment, an integrated circuit is provided comprising a substrate, a cache memory array in the substrate, and a three-dimensional primary memory array above the substrate. Other preferred embodiments are provided, and each of the preferred embodiments can be used alone or in combination with one another.

Three-dimensional memory cache system

An acquisition/playback device and a memory device including a solid-state write-once memory array are used to acquire and display digital information such as digital images, voice, music, or the like. Prior to display or other presentation, the digital information is stored in a re-writable memory. After the digital information has been displayed or otherwise presented to the user for review, the user then elects whether to store the digital information in the write-once memory array. Depending upon the user election, the digital information is either stored in the write-once memory array, or erased from the re-writable memory without being stored in the write-once memory array. In this way the limited storage capacity of the write-once memory array is preserved for digital information that is of long-term interest to the user. Similarly, an acquisition/playback device itself can review the digital information stored in the re-writable memory and determine whether to commit that file to the write-once memory or to discard the file from the re-writable memory.
