A system and method are presented for the design and fabrication of arrays of vacuum photodiodes for application to solar power generation. In a preferred embodiment, each photodiode cell comprises a microfabricated enclosure with a hermetically sealed vacuum, an absorptive photocathode, and a transparent anode, wherein the photocathode and the anode are separated by a vacuum gap of less than about 20 micrometers. Light incident on the photocathode through the anode leads to a flux of electrons passing from the photocathode across the vacuum gap to the anode. In a further preferred embodiment, the photocathode is backed by a reflection layer with, e.g., controlled diffuse reflection, thus increasing the efficiency of energy extraction. An array of such cells may be manufactured using automated thin-film deposition and micromachining techniques.

The invention relates to a method of processing of materials using a moving interface, the method comprising: providing a working material, the working material comprising a substrate with a metallic film on at least one side of the substrate; providing an energy source adjacent to the working material, where the energy source is electrical current between a cathode and the working material as an anode; providing for relative controlled movement between the working material and the energy source, where the relative controlled movement is a motor attached to the working material via a linkage; activating the energy source such that the energy processes the working material; moving the energy source and/or the working material relative to the other to control the amount of processing of the working material achieved by the energy, where the processing of the working material is anodization; immersing the working material at a controlled speed into an anodizing bath equipped with a cathode; starting anodization of the metallic film at the edge of the metallic film furthest from the anode connection and just below the anodization bath, and immersing the working material into the bath such that the anodization is moved up the metallic film towards the edge nearest the anode connection, resulting in a complete conversion to oxide, except for a non-anodized small metal or conductive edge where the anode voltage is connected to the workpiece.

A diamond transmission dynode and photocathode are described which include a thin layer of a crystalline semiconductive material. The semiconductive material is preferably textured with a (100) orientation. Metallic electrodes are formed on the input and output surfaces of the semiconductive material so that a bias potential can be applied to enhance electron transport through the semiconductive material. An imaging device and a photomultiplier utilizing the aforesaid transmission dynode and/or photocathode are also described.

A cooling system employing redundant system components is disclosed. The system includes multiple sets of heat: exchanger units, with each set being in fluid communication with a separate, independently operated fluid pump unit. The heat exchanger units are arranged in at least one row of heat exchanger units. The two sets of heat exchanger units are evenly interspersed with each other along the row of heat exchanger units so that a substantially uniform distribution of cooled air is provided in the event one fluid pump unit fails.

Cooling system and method for distributing cooled air

A cooling system and method employing separation chutes and baffles is disclosed. The separation chutes separate the cooled air descending from a heat exchanger positioned above heat-generating equipment in an equipment room from heated air ascending from the heat-generating equipment. Separation of the airflows reduces turbulence and increases cooling efficiencies. The separation chutes are made of a variety of materials, both rigid and flexible, for a variety of applications.

System and method for separating air flows in a cooling system

A system, method and apparatus for detecting a fluid leak in a fluid based cooling system and purging the fluid therein under various conditions. The system, method and apparatus detect fluid levels in the cooling system, fluid pressure in the cooling system and fluid spraying and dripping from the cooling system. Upon an affirmative determination of low fluid levels, low fluid pressure or fluid spraying and dripping from one or more locations in the cooling system, the device automatically purges the fluid from the cooling system. Accordingly, in an overhead fluid-based cooling system, any damage to objects below from having fluid leaked thereon is minimized.
