A process for producing high density detergent compositions is provided. The process is a continuous process during which high density detergent agglomerates are produced by feeding a surfactant paste and dry starting detergent material into a moderate speed mixer/densifier having a centrally positioned rotating shaft and at least one high speed chopper. The surfactant paste is inputted at least one location along the length of the moderate speed mixer/densifier to achieve optimal build-up agglomeration. The proces produces a free flowing, high density detergent composition which can be commercially sold as a low dosage or &ldquo;compact&rdquo; detergent composition.

High density detergent-making process involving a moderate speed mixer/densifier

A process for preparing high density detergent agglomerates having a density of at least 650 g/l is provided. The process comprises the steps of: (a) continuously mixing a detergent surfactant paste and dry starting detergent material into a high speed mixer/densifier to obtain detergent agglomerates, wherein said surfactant paste includes, by weight of said surfactant paste, from about 0.1% to about 50% of a non-aqueous binder, from about 70% to about 95% of a detersive surfactant, and the balance water; (b) mixing the detergent agglomerates in a moderate speed mixer/densifier to further density and agglomerate the detergent agglomerates; and (c) drying said detergent agglomerates so as to form the high density detergent composition. The process may include one or more additional processing steps such as adding a coating agent after the moderate speed mixer/densifier to facilitate and control agglomeration.

The present invention provides a process which produces high density detergent compositions especially suitable for commercialization as a compact detergent product. The process can be easily retrofitted into existing spray drying detergent-making production plants in that it utilizes existing equipment so as to economize the transition from 'tower' based to 'non-tower' based detergent manufacturing plants. The process comprises the steps of: (a) agglomerating starting detergent ingredients in a mixer/densifier such that detergent agglomerates having a density of at least 650 g/l are formed; (b) conditioning the agglomerates in a spray-drying tower so as to enhance the free flowability of the detergent agglomerates: and (c) admixing adjunct detergent ingredients in the detergent agglomerates, thereby producing the high density granular detergent composition.

Agglomeration process for making a detergent composition utilizing

A process for making detergent builder agglomerates by mixing crystalline aluminosilicate or layered silicate detergent builder with selected binder in an energy-intensive mixer to form free flowing agglomerates. The binder is an anionic synthetic surfactant paste or a water-soluble polymer containing at least about 50% by weight of ethylene oxide, and optionally may contain minor amounts of ethoxylated nonionic surfactant. The agglomerates are also substantially free of amorphous alkali metal silicates if free water is present.
