A method and apparatus provide telecommunication terminal status information as enhanced telecommunication terminal status information by establishing communication with a telecommunication switching system controlling a telecommunication terminal by a monitor computer; directly accessing the telecommunication terminal status information from the telecommunication switching system by the monitor computer via a path distinct from that used to transmit the telecommunication terminal status information to the telecommunication terminal; converting the telecommunication terminal status information to enhanced terminal status telecommunication terminal status information by the monitor computer; and presenting the enhanced telecommunication terminal status information to a user of the telecommunication set. The telecommunication set may be a multi-paged telecommunication set. Further, the method and apparatus allow an individual to observe telecommunication terminals of an observed group by receiving enhanced telecommunication terminal status concerning the status of these telecommunication terminals.

Apparatus and method for providing enhanced telecommunication terminal status information

A method and apparatus provide terminal status information by a telecommunication terminal as audio information by generating terminal status information by a telecommunication terminal; establishing a direct connection by a monitor computer to the telecommunication terminal via a direct link to the telecommunication terminal; transmitting the generated terminal status information to the monitor computer by the telecommunication terminal via the direct link; converting the generated terminal status information to audio terminal status information by the monitor computer; and presenting the audio terminal status information to a user of the telecommunication terminal. In addition, the method and apparatus establish a firewall by the telecommunication terminal to prevent the monitor computer from communicating on a network to which the telecommunication terminal is connected whereby the monitor computer is also denied access to other devices connected to the network.

Apparatus and method for providing status information telecommunication

A monitoring device monitors headers of packets on a communications session with a primary communications device, and when it detects packets of a medium that is incompatible with the primary device, it causes those packets to be diverted to a secondary device that is associated with the primary device and that is compatible with that medium. During set-up of the communications session, the monitoring device replaces or supplements the handshake of the primary device, thereby providing to the network a single handshake that identifies the media supported by the combination of the primary and secondary devices.

An integrated video-telephony system is provided. The call record of the original call is merged into the call record of the reestablished call, thus preserving the context of entities involved in the call that exists at the time that the party is dropped.

A communications system featuring a remote security server is provided. The system allows the validation of requests for access to a communications network to be performed in a centralized security server. The use of a security server allows security features to be implemented, without the need to distribute a security algorithm to individual client devices. In addition, changes to the security algorithm can easily be made, because such changes need only be made in the security server itself, and in the communications server to which access is desired. The present invention is particularly useful in connection with communication services provided as part of a private branch exchange.

Method and apparatus for providing communications security using a remote server

In an integrated voice and multimedia communications system (FIG.,), an end-user is given explicit control over which audio access mechanism he wishes to use regardless of whether a call is a multimedia or a voice call. The end-user's voice terminal (,) is equipped with a PC-Audio control button (,). When the user originates or receives a call, a multimedia PBX (,) automatically connects audio to the voice terminal's handset (,) regardless of whether the call is a multimedia or a voice call. If the user then presses the PC-Audio button, the PBX transfers audio to the audio subsystem (,) of the multimedia terminal (,), an LED (,) associated with the button is lit, and the user may cradle the handset without disconnecting the call. If the handset is subsequently lifted, audio is reconnected to the handset and the LED is extinguished. If the button is pressed while its LED is lit, the call is disconnected. If the voice terminal is equipped with a speakerphone (,), interaction thereof with the PC-Audio button mimics a telephone with an integrated speakerphone that is supplemented with an external speakerphone connection.

End-user control of audio delivery endpoint in a multimedia environment

A telecommunications switching system such as a private branch exchange (,) processes calls as follows. When it receives (,) a call associated with an individual vector directory number (VDN), the switching system invokes conventional vectoring (,) and commences processing the call by executing (,) the VDN's call-processing vector. However, when it encounters (,) a &ldquo;wait&rdquo; vector command in the executing vector, the switching system sends (,) a notice of the call and the call's identity to an external source of vectors, such as an expert system implemented on an adjunct processor (,). This notice functions as a request for another call-processing vector for the call. The expert system obtains (,) information relevant to processing of the call from the switching system and from external databases (,), and based on that information dynamically creates (,) a new call-processing vector for the call, in real time. When the switching system receives (,) this new vector, it replaces (,) the old vector with the new vector and continues processing of the call by restarting (,) vector processing and executing (,) the new vector. The switching system may obtain yet additional vectors for processing this call in the same manner as it obtained the second vector. The switching system may also obtain a new vector from the external source for each newly-received call.
