Among other disclosure, a computer-implemented method for obtaining information from an object includes receiving a query configured to extract information from a non-XML object. The non-XML object is created using an object model that provides for: (1) organizing attributes under nodes in a hierarchy; and (2) creating, within the non-XML object, associations between the nodes, also to nodes in another non-XML object. The method includes identifying in the received query any portion thereof that is non-standard with regard to XQuery language. The method includes creating an XML document from the non-XML object using at least the non-standard portion identified in the query. The method includes performing a revised query on the created XML document, the revised query corresponding to the query and being formulated using the XQuery language. The method includes recording, as a response to the query, a result of the revised query.

Obtaining information from an object

Operation of a computer system is governed by an executable application and settings set forth in an XML document to which the application refers during execution. When an application is published for installation, it includes the application and a base XML document. Portions of the base XML document are marked as editable during installation. During installation, an installation manager review the base XML document, identifies editable portions therein and reads installation settings data therefor. The installation manager may generate a modified XML document representing the settings of the base XML document and any modified settings obtained for installation. Modified settings data may be obtained from an operator, from a computer system on which installation occurs or from a dataset representing settings data obtained in prior installations.

XML-based control and customization of application programs

A method and apparatus for providing information about a model of a test for an application, using an application model, the method comprising the steps of: providing a pre configuration of the application or a part thereof; providing a transformation parameter; and providing an at least one post configuration of the at least one application or a part thereof. Once the pre-configuration, transformation parameter of post-configuration are provide, a test description is generated, which can then be compiled to suit and testing tool or environment.
