A separable component assembly is disclosed. The separable component assembly can include a first component having a first interface portion. The separable component assembly can also include a second component coupled to the first component. The second component can have a second interface portion. In addition, the separable component assembly can include a seal disposed between the first and second interface portions. The seal can have a first interface surface associated with the first interface portion. The seal can also have a second interface surface in contact with the second interface portion. Additionally, the seal can have a peel initiator defining a discontinuity in a portion of the second interface surface. Upon separation of the first and second components from one another, the discontinuity can create a stress concentration in the second interface surface that initiates peeling of the second interface surface away from the second interface portion.

Thermally-sensitive hardware is at least partially enclosed within a container in which reactants for a solid-solid endothermic chemical reaction are disposed, surrounding at least a portion of the thermally-sensitive hardware. Methods to desensitize hydrazinium nitroformate (HNF)

A resilient article and method of manufacturing the same using recycled materials are described. Predetermined amounts of thermoset material and thermoplastic binder are mixed and extruded into a die, from which the mixture emerges in the form of a sheet having the approximate thickness of the finished article. The mixture then enters a calibrator, which more precisely shapes the sheet to the desired thickness. The sheet is then cooled and cut to the desired dimensions to provide the finished article. The thermoset material used in the mixture is preferably ground vehicle tire rubber with the fabric and metal removed and the thermoplastic binder is preferably waste polyethylene. The apparatus and method according to the present invention is particularly well suited for manufacturing resilient articles for use as expansion joint material.

An infrared-transparent structure includes a first infrared-transparent element that is transparent to infrared radiation in the 3.6-7 micrometer wavelength range, preferably coated with a zinc-sulfide antireflective coating, and a layer of a solvent-free, infrared-transparent polymer transparent on the first infrared-transparent element. The polymer is formed of an addition-cured silicone, such as addition-cured dimethyl silicone, and a small amount of an adhesion promoter, such as 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane. The polymer layer may either be a surface layer, or it may be used as an adhesive between the first infrared-transparent element and a second infrared-transparent element.

A blur film is made of a polymeric film material transmissive to infrared energy of a selected waveband, which is affixed to a surface of a substrate transmissive to energy of the same selected infrared waveband. The blur film has a texture or a plurality of lenslets thereon, where the surface of each lenslet is a surface of revolution. In a spatial-filter wheel application, the blur film and substrate are affixed to a support, which in turn is rotatably mounted on a drive. The support is structured such that a portion of its circumference is covered by the blur film and a portion of its circumference is not covered by the blur film. The spatial-filter wheel is rotated in front of a detector to produce alternating blurred and direct images on the detector.

Method of fabricating a blur film assembly

A plurality of water- and oil-porous sacks are partially filled with a number of generally toroidal bodies of a polymer material that entraps oil and including mesh fragments scattered throughout the bodies. Each sack is sewn with a perimeter stiffening ring, to retain a flat profile, and has a netting that closes to help inhibit outflow of the oil when the sack is retrieved. When deployed from ship or by air onto a spill, the sacks spread into a pancake shape and the polymer matter forms a single layer that retains the oil. The inventive sacks will float indefinitely without releasing the oil or allowing it to emulsify, so the oil can remain in place until collection efforts are feasible. The sacks can be burned in situ, or standard fishing boats or specialized collection boats can be used to retrieve the sacks, and the collected material can be burned to capture the energy content of the oil or processed to separate the oil from the polymer. The inventive sacks can be used in conjunction with other, known containment or retrieval equipment, such as booms or skimmers. The system is specifically designed for rapid deployment and efficiency in rough water.
