A process for making shaped articles by injecting a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer into a mold cavity in which is maintained a reactive atmosphere containing between 0.1 mole % and 50 mole % F.sub.2 and at least 20 ppm O.sub.2 while the polymer is being injected into the mold, such that any portion of the polymer contacts the reactive atmosphere for a time not greater than 0.5 sec.

The present invention is a process for making shaped articles by injecting a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer into a mold cavity in which is maintained at atmosphere containing between 0.1 mole % and 50 mole % F.sub.2 and at least 20 ppm O.sub.2 while said polymer is being injected into the mold. The process results in shaped articles having altered physical and chemical characteristics. A weld line formed where two interfaces of the polymer are joined in the mold cavity serves as a clean break point when pressure is applied to an article formed by the process. The atmosphere in the mold cavity may contain SO.sub.3.

A carbon dioxide snow generator is disclosed which has a purge conduit for controllably delivering a blast of pressurized fluid at the inner surfaces of the generator to dislodge and remove any residual or clogging deposits of carbon dioxide snow. A vapor loop for such a generator is also disclosed which provides an initial blast of relatively warm carbon dioxide gas at startup which gas entrains and removes any residual liquid before it can freeze in the apparatus.

A system for heating or cooling articles conveyed in a vertical helical path is defined by an endless conveyor belt driven at its inner edge by contact with a rotating drum and a circulating heat exchange fluid propelled horizontally onto the articles by axial flow fans rotating in a vertical plane. The system features a novel arrangement employing scroll means for confining the circulating heat exchange fluid to a substantial portion of the helical path and location of fan means such that the heat exchange fluid is propelled in push-pull manner from the discharge side of one fan means to the intake or suction side of a second fan means. In the preferred embodiment directed to refrigeration of conveyed articles, more particularly foodstuffs to be frozen, the conveyor is located within an insulating housing. Further featured novelty includes location of the driving means for the rotating drum externally of the housing and directing of refrigerant, such as liquid CO.sub.2 into the fan blast in a direction counter to that of the blast.

A carbon dioxide snow hood is disclosed for separating gaseous and solid carbon dioxide particles and depositing a uniform blanket of the carbon dioxide particles in the form of snow on articles to be cooled.

Apparatus for detecting fluid leakage past a control valve in a system for controlling and measuring the flow of a fluid in a conduit of the type having first and second control valves, a flow sensing element of the differential pressure type located in the conduit between the control valves and a differential pressure flow rate indicator connected to the flow sensing element through high and low pressure conduits. Fluid leakage past the control valve discharges from the isolated portion of the fluid conduit first through the low pressure conduit and then through a vent conduit causing a pressure drop along the low pressure conduit which causes an indication of flow on the flow rate indicator.
