A method and apparatus for assessing the cure status of a fibrous blanket manufactured with mineral fibers and binder is disclosed and comprises using continuous thermal measurement as an assessment of cure status. A plurality of thermocouples are installed in various oven locations both above and below the path of the fibrous pack to be cured and readings from the thermocouples are compared by a processor. The thermal measurements may be inlet or outlet temperatures of any particular zone or series of zones; or entry or egress temperatures; or averages or differences of measurements from selected thermocouple locations.

Apparatus and method for continuous thermal monitoring of cure status of glass fiber products

In a method of cutting roofing shingles, multiple webs of roofing material are moved to a cutter. The webs are positioned in stacked relationship prior to the cutter. The webs have distinct portions such as tabs. The locations of the distinct portions of the moving webs are sensed by sensors. End cuts are simultaneously cut through the multiple stacked webs with the cutter to produce separate roofing shingles from the webs. The movements of the webs are controlled, based on the sensed locations of the distinct portions, so that the end cuts of the roofing shingles are positioned at predetermined locations relative to the distinct portions.

A method of producing asphalt strip shingles includes continuously coating a substrate with asphalt to form an asphalt coated sheet, moving the asphalt coated sheet in a machine direction, depositing blend drops of blend drop granules onto the asphalt coated sheet from a blender, providing a signal indicative of the presence of the blend drops at a location downstream from the blender, sensing the color of the blend drops at the downstream location with a sensor, comparing the sensed color of the blend drops with a reference color, and providing a signal indicative of the comparison.

Method and apparatus for monitoring granule coloration on an asphalt coated sheet

A method and apparatus are provided to place a series of timing marks on a granule covered roofing sheet. A rotary pattern cutter cuts a pattern of tabs and cutouts in the continuous granule covered sheet. The rotary position of the pattern cutter and the position of the timing marks are sensed, and the position of the continuous granule covered sheet with respect to the rotary position of the pattern cutter is synchronized in response to the sensed position of the timing marks and the sensed rotary position of the pattern cutter.

A method of making granule-covered roofing material comprises discharging granules onto continuously moving asphaltic material, pressing the granules into the asphaltic material, directing light toward the granule-covered asphaltic material, measuring the reflected light from the granule-covered asphaltic material, and responding to the measured reflected light by modifying a process parameter to effect a change in the reflectance of light from the granule-covered asphaltic material.
