A portable induction heating tool includes a housing which includes a base having a support surface. The support surface defines a recess facing away from the housing. The recess is at least partially defined by a wall projecting from the support surface. A work coil is within the housing and secured to the base in a location aligned with the recess. The portable induction heating tool includes electronic circuitry which is configured to provide oscillating electrical energy to the work coil, thereby generating an oscillating magnetic field projecting away from the base. The electronic circuitry is also configured to detect a quantity of energy consumed by the work coil and to limit the quantity of energy to a predetermined quantity.

The handheld, self contained, air cooled induction heater which engages an A.C. power source, a rectifier to convert A.C. to D.C., an inverter which converts the D.C. to A.C. operating at substantially higher frequency than the A.C. power line frequency, a high frequency step-down transformer having magnetic cores, wherein at least a primary winding is split into two parts which are each wound around one of two suitable structures such as legs of the transformer magnetic core, and a secondary winding being connected to heat dissipating terminals functionally engaged to a work coil. The transformer for the induction heater has a primary and secondary wound around two suitable structures such as both legs of a magnetic core to reduce leakage inductance and increase power output compared to the primary and secondary windings of the same number of turns all wound on one leg of the magnetic core.

A high frequency battery charger includes a converter, drive logic, and control logic. The converter transforms a DC voltage into a high frequency AC voltage. The drive logic controls a conversion of the high frequency AC voltage through a train of pulses. The control logic adjusts the output of the converter to maximize a charging cycle of a battery. The method of transforming an AC input into a direct current output used to charge a rechargeable battery includes transforming an AC input into a first DC output; transforming the first DC output into a high frequency AC output; transforming the high frequency AC output into a second DC output; and passing a charging current to an external load when the load is correctly connected to an output.

An apparatus and system for using magnetic fields to heat magnetically susceptible materials within and/or adjacent to adhesives, resins, or composites so as to reversibly or irreversibly bond, bind, or fasten opaque or non-opaque solid materials to one another. The system makes use of the effect that alternating magnetic fields induce eddy currents and generate heat within susceptors, and the effect that alternating magnetic fields additionally induce magnetic hysteresis that occurs in magnetic materials and thereby generate heat. An induction heating tool is used to emit the magnetic field at its work coil, and an electronic controller measures the energy being used by a power converter that generates the alternating current driving the work coil which creates the magnetic field. The distance between the susceptor and work coil is repeatedly analyzed based upon the power converter's input energy, and the work coil is driven at a repeatedly corrected power level during the heating cycle. Once a sufficient accumulated energy has been delivered to the susceptor, the magnetic field is turned off automatically by the tool, thus preventing overheating of the susceptor.

The detector includes a filter for emphasizing the harmonic content of the power supply output, an attenuator, a comparator or other detector/threshold device, and a delay circuit. A power supply shut-down switch may be included or the present fault detector may be interconnected to shut-down switch of a conventional ground fault interrupter. A dimmer oscillator for a high frequency luminous tube power supply including a frequency shiftable high frequency oscillator, a variable duty cycle low frequency oscillator operatively connected to the high frequency oscillator for controlling the high frequency oscillator between a first normal output operating frequency and a second higher frequency. A low pass filter within the high frequency supply whereby the supply output to a luminous tube load is reduced, when the oscillator is operating at the second higher frequency, to a low intensity ionization maintenance level. An integrator between the low and high frequency oscillators whereby the transition between the first nominal and second higher operating frequencies is smoothed to reduce acoustic noise and false GFI and OVP triggering. A frequency control diode between the low and high frequency oscillators to limit the lower frequency excursion, and to maintain oscillation of, the high frequency oscillator.
