A powertrain includes an internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber and an aftertreatment system. A method for reducing NOx emissions in the powertrain includes monitoring an actual exhaust gas feedstream ratio of NOto NO, monitoring a desired exhaust gas feedstream ratio of NOto NO, comparing the actual and the desired exhaust gas feedstream ratios of NOto NO, and selectively initiating a NOgeneration cycle based upon the comparison of the actual and the desired exhaust gas feedstream ratios of NOto NO comprising injecting fuel mass into the combustion chamber after a primary combustion event.

Methods for engine exhaust NOx control using no oxidation in the engine

In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a device for generating hydrogen from a water vapor containing exhaust is provided. The device comprises an exhaust diverter and a hydrogen generation section. The exhaust diverter is configured to divert a portion of the exhaust to the hydrogen generation section. The hydrogen generation section comprises an electrolysis unit defining a hermetically sealed void volume configured to accumulate and store hydrogen. The exhaust diverter may be placed in communication with a heat exchanger configured to increase a fractional relative humidity of the diverted exhaust by cooling the diverted exhaust. In accordance with 37 CFR 1.72(b), the purpose of this abstract is to enable the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the public generally to determine quickly from a cursory inspection the nature and gist of the technical disclosure. Hydrogen and oxygen generation from a water vapor containing exhaust

An apparatus and a method for removing NOx from an exhaust stream of a lean-burn engine during an engine cold start are provided. The apparatus includes a close-coupled LNT coupled to a main LNT by a hollow conduit. NOx from the cold exhaust is initially stored on the close-coupled LNT. As the engine exhaust warms up, the close-coupled LNT reaches its operating temperature and reduces the stored NOx to N. When the temperature of the close-coupled LNT reaches approximately 350&#xb0; C., NOx is released from the close-coupled LNT, is absorbed on the main LNT, and is converted to Nduring fuel-rich conditions, The close-coupled LNT can be regenerated after the engine is turned off by providing heat. The released NOx during the regeneration of the closed-coupled LNT is absorbed by the main LNT. The stored NOx on the main LNT can be reduced to Nduring the next vehicle operation.

Removing nitrogen oxides during a lean-burn engine cold start

Regeneration of a phosphorus poisoned automotive exhaust catalyst is accomplished in a preferred embodiment by washing the catalyst or soaking it to the point of incipient wetness with an aqueous solution of an acid such as HCl, HNO.sub.3 or oxalic acid and subsequent heating of the wetted catalyst in air or other oxygen-containing gas.
