A device includes a cover that includes a base. The cover is configured to be positioned over a mount that couples a support structure of an electrical device to another element. The electrical device includes an energized terminal that is configured to connect to an electrical power system and a grounded terminal. The device also includes an insulating interface coupled to the base of the cover such that, when the cover is positioned over the mount, the interface contacts the support structure to substantially electrically insulate the mount. A system includes an electrical device, a support structure that holds the electrical device on the first side, a mount configured to couple the structure to another element, the mount being grounded during operation of the system, and a protective device positioned over the mount.

An electrical apparatus of an electric distribution power system includes an electrical device having a high voltage electrical terminal that may be energized, an exterior insulating housing, and an insulator. The exterior insulating housing surrounds and insulates the electrical device, and includes an opening through which the high voltage electrical terminal protrudes such that at least a portion of the high voltage electrical terminal is external to the exterior insulating housing. The insulator covers the electrical terminal and is attached to the exterior insulating housing such that no current flow path is provided through an interface between the insulator and the exterior insulating housing.

A surge arrester includes a stack of components having at least one varistor. Each component has end faces, at least one of which is mechanically bonded to an end face of another component such that the combined components of the stack define a single, monolithic structure that serves as both an electrically-active element and a mechanical support element of the surge arrester. The surge arrester also includes an insulative housing surrounding the stack of components. The stack of components is capable of withstanding current pulses having magnitudes of 65 kA and durations of {fraction (4/10)} microseconds without significant degradation in operating performance of the stack of components.

A surface of a first ceramic component is joined to a surface of a second ceramic component using a silver-based composition. The silver-based composition is a mixture of silver metal and a metal oxide and the metal in the metal oxide is a metal other than silver. The silver-based composition is applied to the surface of the first ceramic component and to the surface of the second ceramic component. The silver-based composition applied to the first ceramic component is contacted to the silver-based composition applied to the second ceramic component. The surfaces of the first and second ceramic components are heated to melt the applied silver-based compositions. The surfaces of the first and second ceramic components are cooled to form a bond between the first and second ceramic components.

A housing for an electrical apparatus includes a sheath, at least one shed and a hydrophobic coating. The sheath includes a first electrically insulative material and an outer surface. The at least one shed includes a second electrically insulative material and an outer surface. The hydrophobic coating is applied to the outer surface of at least one of the sheath and the at least one shed. One of the first electrically insulative material and the second electrically insulative material includes an electrically insulative, polymeric material.

A fail-safe, non-fragmenting surge arrester includes a liner having outlets formed in the walls thereof for venting ionized gases generated within the liner by internal arcing. The vented ionized gas forms a lower impedance path for the current which is thereby shunted around the failed internal components, preventing the generation of internal pressure which could otherwise cause a fragmenting failure mode of the arrester. The internal components include stacked varistor elements and may include an internal fuse link electrically in series with the varistors.
