Methods of dissolving copper into electrolytic solutions, such as solutions comprising nitrogen compounds, by supplying an anodic current to a copper or copper-containing metal that is in contact with an electrolytic solution comprising a nitrogen compound (such as 2-hydroxyethylamine) and carbon dioxide. Anodic current may be provided by, for example, galvanic coupling with a material having a more positive reduction potential in the electrolytic solution (or given the system of electrolytic solutions) than copper, and/or by applying an impressed anodic current to the copper or copper-containing metal. Separate reaction vessels may be employed to house a first copper metal and a second cathode metal, as well as the electrolytic solutions associated with each.

A corrosion-inhibited antifreeze composition is disclosed. Specifically, the antifreeze composition comprises a major portion of a liquid alcohol freezing point depressant and a minor portion of at least one hydroxyl-substituted aromatic carboxylic acid having the hydroxyl radical disposed proximate to the carboxylic radical. The above described acid is employed as a corrosion inhibitor. Other conventional corrosion inhibitors may be employed in conjunction with the acids. In another embodiment, the present invention relates to a process for inhibitig the corrosion of metals present in the cooling system of an internal combustion engine which comprises intimately contacting the metal surface to be inhibited against corrosion with the antifreeze composition described above. Most preferably, the target substrate is high lead solder.

Corrosion-inhibited antifreeze/coolant composition

A process in which a dialdehyde is reacted with a polyoxyalkylene glycol to form a dialdehyde glycol condensate which is alkoxylated with propylene oxide, butylene oxide or mixtures thereof and the resulting product is then catalytically aminated to provide, for example, a tetramine is disclosed. These compounds are useful as curing agents for epoxy resins and for reaction with isocyanates to prepare polyurea elastomers and to manufacture articles, such as automotive body panels by reaction injection molding.

This invention relates to reaction injection molded elastomers derived from high molecular weight amine terminated polyethers, a chain extender, an aromatic polyisocyanate and an aditive comprising an amine of the general formula ##STR1## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl and alkylphenyl each of 8 to 30 carbon atoms, W is OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 and/or OCH.sub.2 CH(CH.sub.3), R' is methyl or ethyl, x ranges from 0 to 50, and y ranges from 0 to 14.

Water soluble thickeners made by alkoxylating monohydric alcohol hydrophobes are described. The monohydric alcohol should have at least 18 carbon atoms to be properly hydrophobic. In addition, a large proportion of ethylene oxide must be added, such that the molar ratio of ethylene oxide to monohydric alcohol hydrophobe is at least 40:1. Improved results are obtained if 8-15 moles of propylene oxide are added as a block to the single mole of hydrophobe first. The alkoxylations are necessary to provide the desired viscosities and hydrophilic nature. These thickeners are particularly useful in the glycol-water based fluids of this invention.

This invention relates to reaction injection molded elastomers derived from high molecular weight amine terminated polyethers and/or high molecular weight polyols, a chain extender, a polyisocyanate, a chloro and/or isocyanate silane coupling agent, and untreated filler material. The reaction injection molded (RIM) elastomers of this invention are useful, for example, as automobile body parts.

The use of methylene azelaic acid having the formula CH.sub.2 .dbd.C--[(CH.sub.2).sub.3 --COOH].sub.2 or an alkali metal salt thereof in glycol and water based automotive antifreeze formulations is described. Unlike natural dicarboxylic acids such as sebacic acid, methylene azelaic acid does not form a precipitate and drop out of solution, rendering the antifreeze unprotected against corrosion. The methylene azelaic acid component should be present in an amount of from 1.5 to 4.5 wt. % based on the glycol component.

A novel group of surface active agents is revealed. These surface active agents are the condensation product of an aldehyde or ketone of from 9 to 20 carbon atoms with a polyoxyalkyleneamine which is an amine terminated block copolymer of oxyethylene and oxypropylene groups. The Schiff bases of the present invention are characterized by the general formula: ##STR1## In this general formula, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 can either be hydrogen or an alkyl radical such that the sum of carbon atoms in the radical R.sub.1 --C--R.sub.2 is from 9 to 20.
