An electrode material useful as a dry in place deposit comprising at least one metal chelating polymer; an active material capable of reversibly intercalating lithium ions; a plurality of electrical conductor particles; a binder polymer. The electrode material is formed into a slurry using a non-aqueous solvent. The metal chelating polymer may be a reaction product of a polyphenolic polymer; an aldehyde, a ketone, or mixtures thereof; and an amine. The electrode material slurry is deposited on a current collector and dried to form a positive electrode in a secondary lithium ion battery. The deposited electrode material has high flexibility, adhesion to the current collector, resistance to electrolyte damage, and low electrical resistance. The electrode material forms a superior positive electrode at a relatively low additional cost and with no increase in process complexity.

In one embodiment, a metal loss inhibitor concentrate is provided which contains water, (A) a component of dissolved organic compounds and polymers that contain at least two hydroxy moieties per molecule and an average of at least 0.4 hydroxy moieties per carbon atom; (B) a thiourea component; and (C) a dissolved component containing aryl and quaternary ammonium moieties; and, optionally: (D) a wetting agent, such as a component of an ethoxylate of an alcohol. Such solutions form useful inhibitor concentrates when combined with aqueous chelating cleaning solutions, wherein such solutions, when contacted with a metal surface, are effective in removing scale, smut and other deposits from the metal surface but exhibit a reduced tendency to attack or unduly etch the metal itself, or to inhibit the subsequent desired oxidation and dissolution of metallic copper deposits.

An acid inhibitor concentrate is provided which contains water, at least one polyamino-aldehyde resin such as a quaternized polyethylenepolyamine-glyoxal resin, and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of acetylenic alcohols, ethoxylated fatty amines, ethoxylated fatty amine salts, and aldehyde-releasing compounds (such as hexamethylenetetramine). Such concentrates form useful metal cleaning and pickling solutions when combined with aqueous acid, wherein such solutions, when contacted with a metal surface, are effective in removing scale, smut and other deposits from the metal surface but exhibit a reduced tendency for the aqueous acid to attack or etch the metal itself.

Aqueous corrosion inhibitor compositions, preferably storage-stable, useful in acidic cleaning solutions for cleaning the surfaces of metal, comprising reaction products of at least one rosin amine component, at least one non-flammable liquid ketone component, at least one carboxylic acid component, at least one paraformaldehyde component and water; aqueous acidic cleaners prepared therefrom; and methods of their use. A composition and method for coating and touching up a metal surface is provided. Process for coating and/or touching up coatings on metallic surfaces

A chromium free conversion coating at least equivalent in corrosion protective quality to conventional chromate conversion coatings can be formed on metals, particularly cold rolled steel, by a dry-in-place aqueous acidic liquid that preferably has a pH value between 0.5 and 5.0 and comprises: (A) &ldquo;fluorometallate&rdquo; anions consisting of (i) at least four fluorine atoms, (ii) at least one atom of an element selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, silicon, aluminum, and boron, and, optionally, one or more of (iii) ionizable hydrogen atoms and (iv) oxygen atoms; (B) a component of divalent or tetravalent cations of elements selected from the group consisting of cobalt, magnesium, manganese, zinc, nickel, tin, copper, zirconium, iron, and strontium in such an amount that the ratio of the total number of cations of this component to the number of anions in component (A) is at least about 1:5 but not greater than about 3:1; (C) a component selected from the group consisting of phosphorus-containing inorganic oxyanions and phosphonate anions; and (D) a component of polymers of hydroxy styrene, modified by substitution on the aromatic rings of the polymers of substituted aminomethyl moieties, in which the substituents (other than the carbon atom that is directly bonded to an aromatic ring in the polymer) on the amino nitrogen atom jointly contain at least two carbon atoms and at least one hydroxy moiety but neither of these substituents on the amino nitrogen atom individually contains more than half as many hydroxyl moieties as it has carbon atoms, unless it contains only one carbon atom.

Composition and process for treating metals

Fairly pure metallic nickel may be efficiently dissolved in non-oxidizing acid. If the nickel includes individual pieces longer than 0.5 mm in any linear dimension, oxidizing agent is preferably added from the beginning of dissolution, while if the nickel is powdered so that no single piece has a linear dimension longer than 0.35 mm, oxidizing agent is preferably added only after most of the originally supplied nickel has been dissolved. After oxidizing agent is added, most or all of the remaining undissolved nickeliferous solid will then dissolve. The temperature of the reaction mixture of acid liquid and solid nickel preferably is room temperature at the beginning of dissolution but is raised in steps to a final value of at least 65&deg; C. and maintained at that temperature for several hours.

Dissolution of nickel in non-oxidizing aqueous acid solutions

An especially effective hydrophilicizing treatment for solid surfaces, particularly those of conversion coated aluminum, is a liquid mixture of water, organic polymer molecules that include sulfonyl/ate moieties, and preferably also a substance made by mixing with aqueous phosphoric acid at least one metal, metal oxide, or metal hydroxide so as to form a transparent liquid mixture. The treatment liquid preferably has a nearly neutral pH and is applied to a substrate and dried in place by exposure to heat.

To improve at least one of the hydrophilicity, corrosion resistance, and adhesion by subsequently applied paints, a solid surface, preferably an aluminum alloy surface, is treated with an initial treatment liquid that comprises water and dissolved, dispersed or both dissolved and dispersed polymers that include substantial mass fractions of benzene rings that are substituted with at least one oxygen atom and at least one substituted aminomethylene moiety on each ring, and then treated with a secondary treatment liquid that comprises water and vanadate anions.
