A process for producing a lubricating base oil having high oxidation stability, wherein the feed used to prepare the lubricating base oil contains at least 5 wt. % olefins, said process comprising (a) determining the weight percent of olefins present in the feed by means ofH NMR; (b) hydroprocessing the feed under hydroprocessing conditions selected to reduce the amount of olefins present to a target value which has been pre-determined by means ofH NMR to produce a lubricating base oil having the desired oxidation stability; and (c) collecting a lubricating base oil having the selected oxidation stability from the hydroprocessing zone.

A process for removing contaminants from the products of a Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction, said contaminants comprising (i) particulates having an effective diameter of greater than 1 micron and (ii) at least 5 ppm of aluminum in aluminum-containing contaminants having an effective diameter of less than 1 micron, said process comprising the steps of (a) passing the products of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction through a first particulate removal zone capable of removing particulates having an effective diameter of greater than 1 micron; (b) collecting from the first particulate removal zone a substantially particulate free Fischer-Tropsch feed stream containing 5 ppm or more of aluminum in aluminum containing-contaminants having an effective diameter of less than about 1 micron; (c) contacting the substantially particulate free Fischer-Tropsch feed stream in up-flow mode with an aluminum active catalyst in a guard-bed under aluminum activating conditions, whereby a feed stream mixture is formed which comprises aluminum-containing particles having an effective diameter of more than 1 micron in a Fischer-Tropsch hydrocarbon continuous phase; (d) passing the feed stream mixture through a second particulate removal zone capable of removing substantially all of the aluminum-containing particles formed in step (c); and (e) recovering from the second particulate removal zone a Fischer-Tropsch product containing less than about 5 ppm total aluminum.

A process for upgrading a Fischer-Tropsch feedstock which comprises (a) recovering from a Fischer-Tropsch reactor a Fischer-Tropsch wax fraction and a Fischer-Tropsch condensate fraction, wherein the Fischer-Tropsch condensate fraction contains alcohols boiling below about 370&deg; C.; (b) contacting the Fischer-Tropsch condensate fraction with a dehydration catalyst in a dehydration zone under dehydration conditions pre-selected to convert at least some of the alcohols present in said fraction into olefins and recovering a first intermediate effluent from said dehydration zone; (c) pyrolyzing the paraffins in the Fischer-Tropsch wax fraction in a thermal cracking zone under thermal cracking conditions pre-selected to crack the Fischer-Tropsch wax molecules to form olefins and collecting a second intermediate effluent from the thermal cracking zone; (d) passing the first and second intermediate effluents recovered from steps (b) and (c) to an oligomerization zone containing an oligomerization catalyst under oligomerization conditions to form an oligomerization mixture having a higher molecular weight than either of said first and second intermediate effluent; (e) hydrofinishing the oligomerization mixture in a hydrofinishing zone; and (f) recovering from the hydrofinishing zone a C plus hydrocarbon product, most preferably a lubricating base oil.

Process for upgrading fischer-tropsch syncrude using thermal cracking and oligomerization

A process for increasing the yield of C plus hydrocarbon products from a Fischer-Tropsch plant which comprises (a) recovering a Fischer-Tropsch condensate fraction boiling below about 700 degrees F. from the Fischer-Tropsch plant, wherein said fraction contains at least 10 weight percent and preferably more olefins; (b) contacting the olefins in the Fischer-Tropsch condensate fraction under oligomerization conditions, at a reaction temperature between about 650 degrees F. and 800 degrees F. with an oligomerization catalyst comprising active chromium on an inert support; and (c) recovering a C plus hydrocarbon product.

Process for the oligomerization of olefins in Fischer-Tropsch condensate using chromium catalyst and high temperature

A process for increasing the yield of C plus hydrocarbon products from a Fischer-Tropsch plant which comprises the steps of (a) separating a Fischer-Tropsch product into a wax fraction and a condensate fraction; (b) dewaxing the wax fraction to produce a high boiling intermediate; (c) hydrofinishing the high boiling intermediate; (d) dehydrating the alcohols in the condensate fraction to convert them into olefins; (e) oligomerizing the olefins to form higher molecular weight hydrocarbons; (f) hydrofinishing the oligomerization mixture; and (g) and recovering a C plus hydrocarbon product from the hydrofinishing zone.

Process for increasing the yield of lubricating base oil from a Fischer-Tropsch plant

A voltage and continuity tester consists of a positive probe, a negative probe, and a valve finder probe. An AC/DC activated loud buzzer is coupled across the positive probe and the negative probe. In the preferred embodiment, the valve finder probe is coupled to the negative probe via a diode. In operation, the voltage and continuity tester is a simple, convenient and affordable diagnostic tool used to systematically troubleshoot common problems with irrigation and other systems. The loud AC/DC activated buzzer allows diagnosis of system failures from a remote location and eliminates the need to stay within close visual range for interpretation of test results. When used to test irrigation systems, the valve finder probe allows a user to quickly and easily locate any valve in the system. In the preferred embodiment, the positive probe and the negative probe include piercing connectors that break through the insulation of a wire and directly contact the wire without having to cut the insulation.

This invention makes possible substantially continuous flow of uniformly distributed hydrogen and hydrocarbon liquid across a densely packed catalyst bed to fill substantially the entire volume of a reactor vessel by introducing the fluids as alternate annular rings of gas and liquid (i.e. a mixture of liquid hydrocarbon and a hydrogen-containing gas) at a rate insufficient to levitate or ebullate the catalyst bed. Catalyst are selected by density, shape and size at a design feed rate of liquids and gas to prevent ebullation of the packed bed at the design feed rates. Catalysts are selected by measuring bed expansion, such as in a large pilot plant run, with hydrocarbon, hydrogen, and catalyst at the design pressures and flow velocities. The liquid and gas components of the feed flow into the bed in alternate annular rings across the full area of the bed. At the desired flow rate, such catalyst continually flows in a plug-like manner downwardly through the reactor vessel by introducing fresh catalyst at the top of the catalyst bed by laminarly flowing such catalyst in a liquid stream on a periodic or semicontinuous basis. Catalyst is similarly removed by laminarly flowing catalyst particles in a liquid stream out of the bottom of the catalyst bed. Intake for such flow is out of direct contact with the stream of gas flowing through the bed and the flow path is substantially constant in cross-sectional area and greater in diameter by several times than the diameter of the catalyst particles. The catalyst of this invention produces a plug-flowing substantially packed bed of hydroprocessing catalyst which occupies at least about 75% by volume of the reactor volume.

For a heavy hydrocarbonaceous feed, especially good hydrodemetalation and hydrodesulfurization are achieved, as well as MCR reduction, using a catalyst having 5 to 11 percent of its pore volume in the form of macropores, and a surface area greater than 75 m.sup.2 /g. Preferably the catalyst has a peak mesopore diameter greater than 165 .ANG., as determined by mercury porosimetry, and an average mesopore diameter greater than 160 .ANG..
