Systems and methods for decreasing alien crosstalk use enhanced patch cords for introducing additional attenuation. The enhanced patch cords are preferably shielded to reduce alien crosstalk down their lengths and also attenuate signals passing therethrough to a greater extent than standard communication patch cords. The interaction of two enhanced patch cords results in two suppression steps for alien crosstalk and only one suppression step for intended signal passing through a communication cable.

Communication cables are provided in which a core lay length of the cable varies along the cable length. The cable may be provided with different segments that have different core lay lengths. It is desirable for neighboring core lay lengths in a cable to differ by a factor of two, to enable a reduction in power-sum alien near-end crosstalk (PSANEXT) when two cables are installed alongside one another. Segments of the cable having different core lay lengths may be spaced periodically along the length of the cable, and the periodicity of the spacing may be altered by a jitter distance. The introduction of jitter into the periodicity of the spacing of the segments increases the likelihood that a beneficial placement of core lay lengths will occur when two or more cables are installed alongside one another.

An electrical cable includes a cable jacket defining a central longitudinal axis and a plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors oriented longitudinally within the cable jacket. Each of the twisted pairs of insulated conductors has a width. A filler element is disposed in the cable jacket and is located adjacent to at least one of the twisted pairs of insulated conductors. The filler element defines a width that is substantially larger than the width of each the twisted pairs of insulated conductors. The filler element has a central axis laterally offset from the central longitudinal axis of the cable jacket. The filler element reduces alien crosstalk from an adjacent cable. A separator is disposed in said cable jacket between the twisted pairs of insulated conductors to reduce crosstalk between the twisted pairs of insulated conductors.

An electrical cable that has a cable jacket defining a central longitudinal axis and at least first, second, third, and fourth twisted pairs of insulated conductors oriented longitudinally within the cable jacket and forming a core. Each of the twisted pairs of insulated conductors defines a width. A filler element is disposed in the cable jacket and located adjacent to at least one of the twisted pairs of insulated conductors. The filler element defines a width that is substantially larger than the width of each of the twisted pairs of insulated conductors. The filler element has a central axis laterally offset from the central longitudinal axis of the cable jacket, and the filler element is twisted around the core.

A cable includes a plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors, and an insulating cable jacket that has a central longitudinal axis encloses the twisted pairs of insulated conductors. The cable jacket defines an inner perimeter that surrounds the twisted pairs of insulated conductors that is substantially circular in section transverse to the central longitudinal axis and an outer perimeter that is substantially non-circular in section transverse to the central longitudinal axis. The outer perimeter includes at least one raised area for maintaining spacing from an adjacent cable, thereby reducing alien crosstalk.
