A fuel pressure relief valve is provided to minimize evaporative emissions due to fuel leakage through the fuel injectors. The fuel pressure relief valve is sealed during operation to prevent flow through the valve. When the automotive vehicle is not operating and the temperature has cooled, the valve unseals. Thereafter, temperature rises that would otherwise result in pressure buildup are prevented.

A fuel vapor vent assembly with liquid trap is incorporated in a vent valve mounted on a motor vehicle fuel tank. The vent valve operates to vent the fuel tank through a vertically oriented orifice in the vent assembly when the valve is in a normal upright position and closes the orifice when the fuel tank together with the valve is tipped to a significant degree from this position. An elevated liquid trap is provided in the vent assembly at the outlet of the orifice that traps liquid from the venting fuel vapor while permitting venting to continue therethrough and then drains the trapped liquid back past the valve into the tank when the pressure in the latter is relieved. An insert mounted in the valve body is adapted to define both the orifice and liquid trap.

An apparatus for controlling the routing of fuel vapor in an automotive fuel vapor recovery system that includes a pressure actuated control valve. A vent line extends between the tank and the mouth of the filler pipe of the fuel system. A venturi member located in the vent line includes a signal port in communication with the control valve. Vapor flows through the vent line and venturi creates a low pressure signal which operationally acts on the control valve.

The invention incorporates a high flow, pilot actuated pressure relief/rollover valve into a refueling vapor recovery system having a vapor vent line for recirculating vapor past the aspirator of a refueling nozzle and a nozzle seal for engaging a refueling nozzle in an airtight manner. All vapor of evaporative hydrocarbons created during the act of refueling are routed directly to an onboard storage canister.

The invention is a fuel vapor release valve 10 having a two-stage closure. A high volume vapor outlet 15 of large radius is sealed by a valve member 24, upon tilting of the vehicle or in the presence of liquid fuel. The valve member 24 includes a cap member 34 having an orifice 42 of small radius extending therethrough and a seat 36 for engaging with and partially sealing the vapor outlet 14. Loosely engaged with the cap member 34 is a plug member 30 carried by a float member 38 for engaging with and sealing the orifice 42. Upon return to normal operating condition, the plug member 30 first unseats from the orifice 42 and the cap member 34 then unseats from the vapor outlet 14.

High volume fuel vapor release valve

An over-pressure relief valve to be positioned within an opening of a vessel, the relief valve having a valve member with a closed end which is positioned within the opening and which carries an O-ring adjacent to the closed end. The O-ring normally engages the vessel in a circumferential pattern surrounding the opening to seal the opening. The valve member further has a second end within the vessel and the second end is resiliently biased toward the interior of the vessel by a coil spring. The coil spring is trapped between a radial flange of the valve member, which is positioned at the second end thereof, and the inside of the vessel. An over-pressure condition within the vessel overcomes the effect of the coil spring and moves the valve member to break the sealing engagement between the O-ring and the vessel. An initial, limited degree of venting occurs through an annulus which is formed between the opening and the valve member. Further venting occurs, if needed, by way of an internal passage in the valve member which extends from the second end to an opposed pair of radial passages that are positioned entirely within the vessel when the O-ring is in sealing engagement with the vessel.
