A viscosity and viscoelasticity measuring instrument has a cam, a follower arm, a flat spring, a plate fixture, and a removable plate assembly. The cam is a rotating circular disk with a spiral slot. A cam follower on the follower arm resides in the spiral slot so that the follower arm pivots about its fixed end as the cam rotates. The spring is attached to and collinear with the fixed end of the follower arm so that the spring pivots in the opposite direction as the follower arm. The removable plate assembly has a lower plate and an upper plate with mating sample surfaces on which test fluid is placed. The lower plate fits into a lower jaw of the plate fixture that is attached to the instrument base. The upper plate fits into an upper jaw of the plate fixture attached to the free end of the spring. A fluid is placed on the lower sample surface. The cam rotates, pushing the follower arm up, causing the spring to pivot down, and pressing the sample surfaces together. The cam is reversed, causing the spring to impart a separation force to the plates. The time it takes for the plates to separate is measured and converted to a viscosity value.

Viscosity and viscoelasticity measuring instrument

A method for prepping a patient for an endoscopic procedure is described. The patient being prepped will consume inert solutions followed by a discharge of fluid into a commode. Light transmitted through the discharged fluid is measured with the procedure continued until the light transmitted reaches a predetermined level. Preferably, the device is disposable.

Method for prepping a patient for an endoscopic procedure

An automatic sample testing machine for testing samples stored in test cards. The machine has a test sample positioning system for moving a tray containing a plurality of test sample cards and fluid receptacles among various stations in the machine. The machine has a diluting station for adding a predetermined quantity of diluent to the receptacles as needed. A pipetting station transfers fluid from one receptacle to another. A vacuum station is provided having a vacuum chamber moveable relative to the tray between upper and lower positions. The chamber cooperates with the tray to make a sealing engagement with the top surface of the tray when it is lowered to the lower position. A vacuum generator supplies vacuum to the chamber. When the vacuum is released from the chamber, the fluid samples are loaded into the cards from the receptacles. The test sample positioning system moves the tray to a cutting and sealing station and then to an incubation station and loads the cards one at a time into a carousel within the incubation station. A test card transport station transports the test cards from the incubation station to an optical reading station, where optical measurements (e.g., transmittance and/or fluorescence optical testing) is conducted on the wells of the card. When the card has been read, it is either moved back to the incubation station for additional incubation and reading or transferred to a card disposal system when the reading is complete.

A disposal system for stacking card-like objects neatly in a magazine. The cards enter the disposal system via a card entrance slot. A push plate located adjacent the slot pushes the cards past a pair of resilient snap elements in the sides of the magazine. A pressure plate is located behind the snap elements and biases the cards that have been pushed over the snap elements forward towards the rear of the snap elements. The cards are maintained in a stacked condition between the snap elements and the pressure plate. When a card is inserted into the card slot, the push plate is operated to an extended position, in which it pushes the card past the snap elements against the cards stacked between the snap elements and the pressure plate. The push plate then retracts, so as to enable another card to enter into the card slot. The user of the machine removes the magazine from the machine when the need arises or when the magazine is fully loaded with cards.

Stacking disposal system for test sample cards or other similarly shaped

A measuring device having, in one embodiment, two measuring tapes held on separate reels in a housing. The housing has two windows for displaying measurement indicia appearing on each tape. Alternatively, electronic digital displays are used to show the measurements. The tapes are spring biased toward the fully wound condition. Each tape has a button controlled clutch locking each respective tape in an extended condition. In a preferred application, a user draws a first tape around her torso just below the breasts, connects the tape to the end of the second tape at the housing, and locks this tape when taut. The device is moved upwardly, now encircling the breasts also, and the second tape is extended to accommodate the additional girth. The second clutch locks the second tape in position. The device is removed from the user's body, and sizes displayed in the windows are read. The first tape measures and indicates rib cage girth, and the second tape converts the additional measurement to cup sizes. The windows expose only the relevant data from each respective tape, maintaining the data visible while the tapes are locked in the extended condition. When the clutches are released, both reels rewind. In another embodiment a single tape is used for determine both measurements and electronic circuitry is used to translate the measurements into nominal sizes.

A detachable paper bag carrier comprising a handgrip connected to two paper clamps. Each clamp comprises a front plate, a top member and two side plates, which leave a channel into which a side of a paper bag may be inserted and which bound a volume of space in which a travelling plate is located. The travelling plate is caused to move by the insertion of the paper bag and retains the paper bag until it is manually released.

A method for joining, by molecular diffusion, an element of greater electrical resistance to a surface of substantially lesser electrical resistance. A piece of resistive material capable of being spot welded to the element of greater electrical resistance is placed in contact with both the surface having substantially lesser electrical resistance and the element having the greater electrical resistance. The resistive piece and the resistive element are spot welded to each other, whereby the heat from that spot weld causes the conductive material to be joined to the piece of resistive material by molecular diffusion. The method is particularly useful for joining nichrome wire to copper-clad printed circuit boards and for joining metal fasteners to copper and aluminum sheet metal surfaces.
