A camera is used in conjunction with storage phosphor paint, configured to examine a surface. The surface is coated with storage phosphor paint in some embodiments. The camera is configured to image the surface coated with the storage phosphor paint, eliminating requirement of fast relaxation times associated with conventional scanners.

A process for constructing a high-tensile strength, high-gradient insulator (HGI) may include stacking alternating layers of conductors and insulators, and vacuum pressure potting the stacked layers onto an insulating rod. An electro-mechanical x-ray generator configured to obtain high-energy operation with favorable energy-weight scaling. The electro-mechanical x-ray generator may include a pair of capacitor plates. The high voltage may be generated in a vacuum tube.

The present invention includes maintaining the region of the proximal lens of a laparoscope at greater than ambient temperature in order to prevent fogging during use. Heating is accomplished using commercially available chemical heat packs generally used for heating boots or gloves, or by using electrically powered heating tape. The invention differs from other anti-fogging devices, which either immerse the distal lens region of the laparoscope in a warm fluid or treat this lens with anti-fogging solutions, in that above-ambient temperature is continuously maintained throughout the laparoscope, since it is known that a cool laparoscope fogs when placed in the vicinity of warm, wet patient tissue.

Method for preventing laparoscope fogging

A lightweight, slender knife having a replaceable, retractable cutting blade, which may be locked either in the operating or deployed position, or in a retracted or safety position, by using a single digit on one hand, is described. Safety of hospital personnel and medical waste-disposal personnel is achieved in the surgical scalpel embodiment of the present knife without loss of function or convenience of the scalpel. An automatically retracting embodiment of the knife is also described.

A three-piece knife having a replacable, retractable cutting blade, which may be locked either in the operating or deployed position, or in a retracted or safety position, by using a single digit on one hand, is described. Safety of hospital personnel and medical waste-disposal personnel is achieved in the surgical scalpel embodiment of the three-piece knife without loss of function or convenience of the scalpel.
