A method for analyzing porosity of a particle and a medium disposed in the porosity of the particle. A video-holographic microscope is provided to analyze interference patterns produced by providing a laser source to output a collimated beam, scattering the collimated beam off a particle and interacting with an unscattered beam to generate the interference pattern for analyzation to determine the refractive index of the particle and a medium disposed in the porosity of the particle to measure porosity and the medium.

Method and system for measuring porosity of particles

A self-assembling structure using non-equilibrium driving forces leading to 'living crystals' and other maniputable particles with a complex dynamics. The dynamic self-assembly assembly results from a competition between self-propulsion of particles and an attractive interaction between the particles. As a result of non-equilibrium driving forces, the crystals form, grow, collide, anneal, repair themselves and spontaneously self-destruct, thereby enabling reconfiguration and assembly to achieve a desired property.

Self assembled particles

A method for creating the colloidal analogs of atoms with valence: colloidal particles with chemically distinct surface patches that imitate hybridized atomic orbitals, including sp, sp2, sp3, sp3 d, sp3 d2 and sp3 d3. Functionalized with DNA with single-stranded sticky ends, patches on different particles can form highly directional bonds through programmable, specific and reversible DNA hybridization. These features allow the particles to self-assemble into 'colloidal molecules' with triangular, tetrahedral and other bonding symmetries, and should also give access to a rich variety of new microstructured colloidal materials.

Colloids with valence: fabrication, functionalization and directional bonding

A method and system for assembling building blocks of colloidal particles and also for shaping of colloids for self-assembly for manufacturing, processing and formation of compositions of matter. A first type of particle is selected as a 'key' particle constructed to mate with a 'lock' particle, the binding arising from depletion forces. A variety of shapes can be used to carry out this method and system to create compositions of matter. Colloids can be shaped by controlled deformation of multiphase colloid particles.

Lock and key colloids and methods of manufacture

The invention provides micron and sub-micron scale particles designed to recognize and selectively interact with each other by exploiting the recognition and specificity enabled by DNA-sequence-encoded coatings. Such materials possess sufficient information coded in their chemical and physical interactions to self assemble and self replicate. The invention further provides methods of using such materials to create self replicating and organizing materials. Replicated copies are permanently linked and then thermally detached, freeing them to act as templates for further growth. This new class of condensed matter systems, provides means to design and control the structure and function of materials and machines from the microscopic to life-size. In another aspect of the invention, depletion type forces and depletion zones can be utilized in the implementation of the self assembly and self replication of materials, including without limitation colloidal particles. The invention further provides novel means of synthesis and materials built by such synthesis, which may be used in a variety of applications, including microelectronics.
