A system and method for quantitatively characterizing moisture content of an at least partially hydrophobic fluid sample. The method includes providing a dry solution of an aprotic solvent, adding at least a part of the fluid sample to the solvent to produce an extract-sample, performing infrared spectroscopic testing on the extract-sample to generate absorbance data representing at least one absorbance characteristic of the extracted sample, and generating moisture data for the sample based on the extracted sample data. The system includes a cell for holding and evaluating an extracted sample, an infrared spectrometer for measuring infrared absorbance characteristics of the extracted samples, a computer equipped with software for analyzing data outputted by the infrared spectrometer and utilizing an empirical model to derive at least one calibration equation relating data representing the absorbance characteristics of the extract-sample to unit moisture concentration, and converting the unit moisture concentration to a measure of moisture content of the sample. The method also utilizes DO to characterize moisture content of the extraction solvent, and compensate for both moisture content of the extraction solvent and matrix effects stemming from miscibility of the hydrophobic fluid in the extraction solvent.

System and method for determining moisture content of hydrophobic fluids

A system and method of characterizing an at least partially hydrophobic sample. The method includes providing an ethanolic solution of ethanol and sodium hydrogen cyanamide, adding a first portion of the ethanolic solution to a sample to produce a reagent-sample mixture, performing infrared spectroscopic testing of the reagent-sample mixture to generate mixture absorption data representing at least one absorption characteristic of the reagent-sample mixture, and generating acidity data for the sample based on the mixture data. The system includes a cell for holding and evaluating a sample which is mixed with an ethanolic solution to create a reagent-sample mixture, an infrared spectrometer for measuring light absorption characteristics of the reagent-sample mixture, and a computer equipped with software for analyzing data outputted by the infrared spectrometer and utilizing an empirical model to derive at least one universal calibration equation relating data representing the light absorption characteristics of the reagent-sample mixture to acidity of the sample.

System and method for determining acid content in lubricants

The present invention relates to antimicrobial agents, methods for the production of these agents, and the use of these agents. The antimicrobial agent of the present invention includes a water-soluble polymer and oligodynamic metal ions which interact with counter-ions of the polymer such that the metal ions are bound to corresponding counter-ions. The water-soluble polymer controls a sustained release of the metal ions. The oligodynamic metal ions preferably include small size metal particles (e.g., nano-sized silver particles) that interact to the water-soluble polymer as well as metal ions derived from one or more water-soluble oligodynamic metal compositions (e.g., metal sulfates and/or metal nitrates). The agent may also include one or more acids, including organic acids (such as sulfates, carboxylic acids, amines, hydroxyls, nitrates, and phosphates) and/or non-organic acids (such as boric acid and dioctylborate).

Polymer-based antimicrobial agents, methods of making said agents, and products incorporating said agents

Disclosed herein is a method and apparatus for controlling and extending the performance of lubricating fluids, such as lubricating oils. The method comprises simultaneous detection of multiple additives and contaminant levels in the lubricating fluids and measured input of selected additives to the lubricating fluids. The additive and contaminants levels are simultaneously and quantitatively determined using a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, and any drop in additive levels below pre-specified limits automatically triggers corrective action whereby a computer-controlled delivery system is employed to replenish the depleted additives. The system can also be employed to detect irreversible degradation of the lubricating fluids and direct the degraded fluids to a holding area where they may undergo treatment or disposal and add new fresh lubricating fluids. A data management station is programmed for monitoring the quality of the fluid and ensuring that the threshold values of additive levels are maintained at all times of operation.
