Optical network communication system with optical line terminal transceiver and method of operation thereof

A system and method of operation of an optical network communication system includes: an optical fiber; an optical link attached to the optical fiber; a data transmitter for sending a downstream data message at a downstream data wavelength in the optical link; an optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) transmitter for sending a OTDR broadcast pattern continuously at an OTDR wavelength different from the downstream data wavelength in the optical link; a broadband photo detector coupled to the optical fiber; and an OTDR receiver for receiving an OTDR reflected response pattern on the broadband photo detector during an open time slot not used for receiving an upstream data message for indicating an optical fault and for calculating an error distance along the optical fiber based on the optical fault.

Optical network communication system with embedded optical time domain reflectometer and method of operation thereof

Linearized optical transmitter units are described for a hybrid optical fiber coaxial cable network. The linearized optical transmitter unit can comprise a directly-modulated or externally-modulated laser optically coupled to an optical conduit directed to an optical fiber communications link and electrically coupled to an electrical RF source line that provides an RF source to drive the laser or an external modulator for a light beam from the laser. A linearization information electrical component comprising memory and/or a processor, and a data output configured to transmit linearization enabling data for input into a direct digital synthesis engine that enables the direct digital synthesis engine to generate an RF signal wherein nonlinear responses of the transmitter and/or the optical fiber communications link are pre-compensated, in which the data is specific for the optical transmitter and/or the optical fiber communications link. An electronic communication channel can connected to the data output of the electrical component to communicate the linearization enabling data external to the linearized optical transmitter unit suitable for communication to the direct digital synthesis engine. The linearized optical transmitter can be assembled in a plug-in module. Corresponding HFC systems and methods are also described.

An optical circuit is disclosed, which may include a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA); an optical filter operable to filter light emerging from the SOA; and a PIN for converting the light output from the optical filter into an electrical signal, wherein the gain profile of the optical filter is configured to maximize throughout of signal energy within a predetermined wavelength range (in-band), and to impose an insertion loss (L) of less than 20 dB on signal energy outside the predetermined wavelength range.

Apparatus and methods for optical communication

Optical transceivers used in data communications equipment are typically bidirectional and require two-way communications in order to maintain their operability. However, in some applications such as cable television, the traffic is highly unbalanced with very high bandwidth requirements in one direction and minimal bandwidth requirements in the opposite direction. Hence for such efficient and cost effective one-way communication applications, unidirectional fiber optic transceivers are useful. There is provided here a unidirectional transceiver provided internally with a keep-alive signal generator to enable unidirectional transmissions. The keep alive signal is, for instance, idle characters for a Gigabit Ethernet communication system, or any other suitable handshake signal which provides the desired operability.

Method and apparatus for one directional communications in bidirectional communications channel

In hybrid fiber coaxial cable networks such as used in cable television where two-way digital communications are desired, a distributed termination system is provided. In such a system the home terminals are digital terminals, such as digital set-top boxes or cable modems using bi-directional transmission standards. The functionality of the head end controller in a conventional system is in this system distributed between the head end and the fiber nodes which link the coaxial cable and optical fiber portions of the system. Thereby the upstream detection takes place in the fiber nodes rather than in the head end by placing upstream burst receivers in the fiber nodes. Further there is a distributed method to enable this by providing synchronization and calibration control between the head end and the fiber nodes. Also, the return path is a digital return path supported by having the burst receivers located in the fiber nodes.

Distributed termination system for two-way hybrid networks

An optical transmission system that includes an optical amplifier coupled to the input of an optical modulator having at least two complementary output ports for providing complementary modulated optical output signals can be used such that the relative intensity noise (RIN) associated with the optical amplifier is coupled into the modulated optical output signals as common mode noise and can therefore be eliminated using a differential detection scheme. Removing the RIN associated with the optical amplifier advantageously increases the carrier to noise ratio (CNR) for the optical transmission system.

Method and apparatus for eliminating noise in analog fiber links

A wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) in an optical fiber transmission system launches analog signals, for instance a multi-channel television signal. The WDM enhances signal quality by transmitting along a single fiber two different optical wavelength signals, each carrying identical RF information. This results in a 3 dB improvement in carrier to noise ratio. The WDM combines two or more wavelengths centered around for instance 1550 nm or 1310 nm. A typical difference between the two wavelengths is 3 nm. In other embodiments, more than two wavelengths are used. The receiver is for instance a single photosensitive element. The phase of the two RF signals is adjusted in the optical or RF domain to be the same upon arrival at the receiver. In other embodiments, the receiver includes two photosensitive elements, each receiving from a receiver end WDM a single wavelength. In this case, the phase adjustment may be applied at the receiver in the optical or RF domain.
